IMPROVED CONCRETE-.BRICK ilititJElINE.-

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK HAWKINS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, vin the'State of Illinois, have invented a useful Improvement in Concrete-Brick Brosses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference beingA had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of refer* ence marked thereon, makingapart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 a sectional elevation of my invention. l
Figure 2, a top view of the pressing-box', with the sliding lid removed.
Figure 3, a top view ofthe devices for pressing the lbricks.
Figure 4, an elevation of the clutch for coupling the pressing-devices.
This invention relates to that kind ofpresses used in the manufacture of artificial building-stone and concrete brick, and for this reason it is arranged to press only one brick at atim'e, and by hand-power.
Its nature consists more especiallyjn a novel arrangement for guiding and operating the lid, whereby it may be openedand closed more readily, and at the same time not be affected in its operation, when the edges become considerably worn, by means of sand and concrete.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I have marked corresponding parts with similar letters, and will now give a detailed description.
A represents one side of the frame, which supports two Yuprights, B, made of iron or other su1table materia-l, and to form the ends of the pressing-box L L similarly to the common presses now in use for a similar i purpose.
S S, gs. l and 2, represent flanges projecting outward from the vertical sides of the mould L L, and arranged to support a slidinglid, M, which is fitted to run in grooves made in flanges C C, at the ends of ,the press.
This arrangement, thus far, is similar tofT. H. Rogerss-press, patented April 10, 1866, but the arrangement for guiding and operating the lid M is very diii'ercnnand as follows:
A slot, v, ismade in one of the ianges, S, of such asizeas will correspond with the thickness ot' the rack T, ig. lu, which is made to run in said slot, and thus guide the lid when being opened and closed; This construction in presses of this kind I consider new and of importance, otherwise the lid, as soon as its edges become worn, would not operate easily, as the cornerswould bind in the grooves, and the rackwould soon wear out by lateral motion. l v
The rack T is rigidly attached to the under side of the lid M, and is operated 'by means of a pinion, 'W,
having a shaft, X, with suitablcbearings attached to standards B, a common crank, a, being used to turn said shaft in the usual manner. All of the'upper part ofthe press, including the standards B, should be made of iron, and the litl M,- especially, fitted to work easily, and also iit the top of the mould L L closely. The levers Q, R, H and I, should he made of iron, and of such lengths as will raise the follower N high enough to pressa brick or building-block` co'nipactly together. .l Y
In the drawings the levers I'I I are 4represented as attached to adrum, E, hymeans ot' a chain, F, awheel, Z, attached to said drum being used to raise and lower Ithe levers, and thus press the brick and lower the follower N.` i
The device for raising the brick out of themouldrconsists of :L shaft, having bearings in the uprights B,
and supporting a pinion, Pff'ig. 1, which operates a'rack rigidly attached toV thc shank ofthe follower In the foregoing description, some parts of the press are simply enumerated, but as they are well-known devices, no trouble will be experienced in constructing a press according to the drawings.-
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isv y The mould L L', provided with slotted ilange Sv and lid M, with its rack T and pinioni'W, the follower N,
with its rack Q and pinion P, levers Q, R, I, and IzI, chain F, drum E, and wheel Z, all arranged and operated substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth..l
