PATENT OEEIcE.
PAINTERS OR PAPER-HANGERS ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,846, dated February 21, 1905.
Application filed April 2, 1904. Serial No. 201,361.
To all whmn i2. may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FoRTIER, of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, and State Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Painters or Paper-Hangers Rollers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates tohand-rollers used by painters when doing stenciling and by paperhangers in applying paper to walls and ceilings; and my purpose is, first, the production of a roller adapted to both of these purposes; second, a roller adapted to receive a cover or cushion, which cover may be removed when soiled and a new or clean one substituted therefor.
To these ends my improved roller consists of the device illustrated in the drawings, de-
scribed in the following specification, and referred to in the subjoined claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved roller closed and without the covering; Fig. 2, an end elevation thereof; Fig. 3, a side elevation thereof opened and Without the covering; Fig. 4, a section of Fig. 1 taken on the line 4 4; Fig. 5, a section of Fig. 3 taken on the line 5 5, covered; Fig. 6, a section of Fig. 2 taken on the line 6 6; Fig. 7, a side elevation of one of the flanges; Fig. 8, the same of one of the pivot-plates, and Fig. 9 a section of Fig. 2 taken on the line 9 9.
Similar letters refer to similar parts.
A is the roller; B, the flanges; C, the pivotplate; D, the shaft; E, the bail or yoke; F, the handle, and Or the covering.
The rollerA is longitudinally divided, (preferably in the middle,) thus forming two semicylindrical parts a and 6, each of which is provided with a centrally-located groove 0, the purpose of which is to provide a chamber for the shaft D, and with series of cat-claws or hooks d, the purpose of which will be set forth in its order.
The flanges B are circular in form and are provided 7 with centrally pierced hubs 0, through which the shaft D-passes. They are further provided with the holes f, adapted to receive the screws g, by means of which they are affixed to the ends of the fixed portion a of the roller A, with the pivot-holes 7L, adapted to receive the pivot-pins 2', upon which the portion 6 of the rollerA swings, and with the hole j, adapted to receive the locking-pin is, which pin serves to hold the parts a and Z) closely in contact when the roller is covered and closed.
The pivot-plates C are semicircular in form, are provided with the screw-holes Z, by means of which they are aflixed to the ends of the movable portion 6 of the roller A, with a laterally-extending pivot-pin m, adapted to enter and rotate within the pivot-hole h of the flange B, with the notch n to accommodate the shaft D, and with a hole adapted to receive the locking-pin it.
The shaft D is affixed in and rotates with the flanges B or (if deemed preferable) may be journaled and rotate in the flanges B.
The bail E consists of a bar lying parallel with the roller A, the ends of which are laterally bent to form the parallel portions Q g, which parallel portions constitute bearings for the shaft D.
The handle F is aflixed to and forms a part of the bail E. It may be made of any suitable material and affixed to the bail E in any convenient manner.
The covering G (which may be of any suitable material) is cut to the required size, one of its parallel edges affixed to the series of the cat-claws or hooks (Z of one of the semicylindrical parts of the roller A, (while its two parts are separated, as shown in Fig. 5,) its body portion drawn tightly over and around the curved sides thereof, and its opposite parallel edge aflixed to the other series of catclaws or hooks (Z and the two parts folded together and secured in place by means of the locking-pin Z; or other suitable device.
It is apparent that by aflixing the covering G to the opened roller A as above described and thereafter closing the same the said covering will be stretched, and therefore lie close to the circumferential surface thereof.
The purposes to which such rollers are applicable are so well understood that I do not deem it necessary to specify them herein.
WV hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a longitudinally-divided roller, one segment having cylindrical flanges affixed to its ends and the other segment having pivot-plates aflixed to its ends; each of said segments being fashioned with a longitudinal groove, and furnished with a series of cat-claws or hooks; said flanges being fashioned with pivot-holes and said pivot-plates being provided with laterally-extending pivot-pins adapted to enter, and to rotate within the said pivot-holes; a shaft extending through the said longitudinal grooves and affixed in the said flanges; and a bail in which the end portions of the said shaft are journaled, substantially as shown and for the purpose specified.
VILLIAM FORTIER. W'itnesses:
H. A. PETERS, H. J. WATERs.
