SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,495, dated February 14, 1905;
Application filed time 28,1904. seriaim'mmsa T (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. EIOHFELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Iron and Steel Columns, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to iron or steel columns built up of special shapes of angle-bars; and the object of the invention is to provide a column in which the parts shall be held together without the necessity of bolts or rivets.
I have illustrated the invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional View of one form, and Fig. 2 a section of a modification.
According to my invention I provide a plurality of angle-bars 3, each of which has two parallel portions 4 and 5, providing between them a recess 6. The portion 5 is extended beyond the portion 4: and has an angular turned flange 7 which is adapted to engage the corresponding-recess 6 of the next ad joining angle-bar. The angle-bars when assembled occupy the relative positions shown in the drawings and are securely held together by a central key 8, driven longitudinally down the center of the column. This key may be a steel bar with a driving fit or a bar of soft Norway iron placed in position and then swaged or upset.
It will of course be understood that in assembling the angle-bars to form the column; three of them are placed in position and then the fourth is slid longitudinally into place be- I claim is 1 A column comprising a plurality of anglebars each having abifurcated web portion providing a short flange, and a long flange with an angularly-turned edge, said angular-turned edge of each bar engaging the channel in the bifurcated portion of the next adjoining bar, substantially as described.
2. A column comprising a plurality of anglebars each having abifurcated web portion providing a short flange and a long flange, with an angularly-turned edge, said angular-turned edge of each bar engaging the channel in the bifurcated portion of the next adjoining bar, and a filling or key piece in the space inclosed by said bars, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IVILLIAM F. EICHFELD.
