SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,172, dated February '7, 1905.

To all whom it may (.IHLUFI'IL:
Be it known that l, HIRAM D. PENNY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newcastle, in the county of (irartield and State of Oolorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a certain class of pumps.
it has for its object to greatly simplify the action and construction of the parts in suitably delivering the water, while they are portable and readily assembled; and it consists of the combination and arrangement of said parts, substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed, and particularly pointed out by the claims.
in the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation, and 3 is a transverse section, of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical section produced through one of the nozzles covering the valved ports of the receivingchamber, said section also passing through said valve and chamber. Fig. 5 is a view showing the nozzles or housings covering said valved ports disassembled or removed from the latter. Fig. 6 is a view showing the water elevating or delivering pipe-sections also disassociatcd and removed from said water-receiving chamber.
In the practicing of my invention I provide a preferably oblong or rectangular receptacle or chamber 1, having opposite lateral ports or inlets 2 to permit of the passage therethrough into said chamber of the water to be elevated, as will be presently explained. A plunger 2, having a solid piston or head 2, preferably having opposite beveled edges, extends through one end of said chamber, with said head or piston adapted to have longitudinal movement in the latter. \Vith the alternate back and forth strokes of said plungers are correspondingly actuated two valves 3 3, arranged to open and close in'like manner ports 3 3" in the upper surface near the ends of the chamber 1. Over these ports and valves are arranged portable nozzles or housings 4, adapted to be held removably in place, preferably by bails or yokes l, pivoted at their lower ends laterally to the chamber 1 and embracing or clamping said nozzles or housings upon said chamber. Said housings or nozzles have inserted into openings or sockets -l", opening out diagonally through their upper ends, pipe sections or members 5 5", respectively, inclining or converging toward and adapted to connect with each other, one, however, being longer than and receiving the contents of the other to provide for a common delivery of the whole of the contents or water of both pipesections at the desired point; consequently effective to produce a continuous flow or discharge of said contents or water. The connection between the pipe members or sections 5 5 is effected by removably litting water-tight the upper end of the shorter pipe member into an opening 5", produced in the longer pipe member suitably intermediately of its ends, preferably as disclosed, the same thus adapted to be readily assembled and disassembled, together with the other parts, as aforesaid, as circumstances may require.
In operation suitableapplication of power, as from a water-motor, engine, or other like source, is made to the plunger through suitable connection or means, imparting the required reciprocating action to said plunger for inducing the passage of the water through the lateral ports of the chamber .1, suitably submerged. .lhe water thus received into the latter is alternately carried or forced by the action of the plunger up through the ports 3 3 in the upper surface of said chamber, past the upward-opening valves 3 3, and into the pipe members 5 5, said valves adapted to accordingly close behind or under the weight of the column of water thus intermittently lifted by them and aid in providing for the effective elevation and delivery of the water, as will be readily understood.
Latitude is allowed as to details herein, as they maybe changed as circumstances suggest without departing from the spirit of my invention and the latter still be protected.
I claim 1. A device of the character described, employing a water-receivingchamber having opposite lateral ports, a plunger working in said chamber and adapted to induce the passage of the Water through said ports, into said chamber. said chamber having in its upper surface, near its ends, ports provided with alternately opening and closing valves, nozzles or housings arranged over the latter ports and valves, and having their pipe-connecting sockets or openings produced diagonally through their outer ends, and pipe-sections connected to said sockets and convergently together and delivering one into the other.
2. A device of the character described, employing a Water-receiving chamber having inlet-ports and valved outlet-ports, a plunger Working in said chamber, nozzles removably clamped over said valved ports, and pipe members connecting With said nozzles and converging toward and connecting With each other, and one effective to deliver beyond the other.
3. A device of the character described, employing a Water-receiving chamber having inlet-ports and valved outlet-ports, nozzles arranged to house said valved ports, pivoted fastenings adapted to clamp said nozzles or housings in place, and pipe members arranged to connect With said nozzles and one to deliver into the other.
i. A pump having inlet-ports and valved outlet-ports, nozzles or housings arranged to cover said valved ports and pivoted clampbails holding said nozzles in place, and pipe members connecting with said nozzles and one delivering into the other.
5. A pump having inlet-ports and valved outlet-ports, nozzles covering said valved outlets, pivoted bail-fastenings clamping in position said nozzles, pipe members having their lower ends removably inserted into said nozzles, the upper end of the shorter pipe member entering the longer of said pipe members,
