PATENT O FICE.
ADO'LPH E. BRION,. OF NEW YORK,
SHEET-METAL WHEEL OR PULLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,742, dated January 24,,1905.
Application filed July 1'7, 1902. Serial No. 115,907.
1'0 aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnoLrH E. BRIoN, a citizen of the- United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Wheels or Pulleys, of which the following is a specification. 1
My invention relates especially to wheels or pulleys made out of sheet metal, preferably steel, and has for its object the provision of a device of this character very simple in construction, while combining lightnes's'with great strength. I
To attain the desired end, my invention consists, essentially, in a sheet-metal wheel or'pulley having the spokes formed integrally with the hub-piece and radiating from each edge thereof, the outer extremities of the spokes being fixed to inwardly-projecting flanges at each edge of the rim, and my invention also involves certain novel and useful combinations or arrangements of parts and peculiarities of construction, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claims. I
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure'l is a plan view of a blank improved wheel. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a completed wheel or pulley made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is an axial cross-sectional view at line 00 m of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a central cross-sectional view at line a a of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a fragment of the wheel-rim having the material thereof perforated, so as to prevent slipping.
Fig. 6 is a modification of Fig. 5, wherein portion of the material is cut away, forming tongues which project outward from the face of the rim.
Like numerals of reference wherever they occur indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
In my present invention I have provided a wheel or pulley of very few parts, said parts being fixed together without welding in any manner.
In forming the hub-piece and spokes a sheet 4 represents strengthening-depressions in the body of the spokes. The outer ends of the spokes are ofiset at 5 and perforated for the reception of rivets 6, by which the spokes are fixed to the inwardly-projecting flanges? of the rim 8. The rim is shown as formed of a single piece of metal, the meeting ends being fixed together by means of rivets 9.
The rim of the wheel is preferably thickened transversely, as indicated at 10, Fig. 3,
where I have shown such thickening as being within the rim, leaving its, face or tread flat, though this particular form of rim is not essential to my invention. By thickening the rim the strength and rigidity of the wheel or pulley is greatly increased.
11 is a strengthening-band surrounding the hub-piece 2, said band having flanges 12,which extend upward against the inner faces of the spokes a short distance, being riveted thereto.
13 is a bushing fixed within the hub-piece 2, and 14 is a set-screw for holding the wheel or pulley in place upon a shaft.
By making the wheel of the blank shown I produce a wheel the hub of which'is of a single piece divided along one line only, the abutting edges of the hub adjacent to this line of division being united by rivets or in other suitable manner and the spokes radiating from the opposite edges of this single-piece tubular hub. This construction possesses great strength and the wheel shown and described is easily manufactured. I
In Fig. 5 are shown perforations 15 through the material of the rim 8, and in Fig. 6 the material of the rim is partially cut away and bent outward, forming projecting tongues 16.
Having now fully described my invention,
what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A sheet-metal wheel or pulley having an integral hub of tubular form divided along a single line, the abutting edges along such line being united, spokes integral with and radiating from each edge of the hub, and a rim to which the spokes are fixed at their outer ends, substantially as set forth.
2. In a sheet-metal wheel or pulley, a series of spokes formed integrally with a singlepiece hub and radiating from each edge thereof, in combination with a rim having inwardlyprojecting flanges at each edge to which the ends of the spokes are riveted.
3. In a Wheel or pulley, spokes formed of sheet metal integral with a single-piece tubular hub and radiating from each edge thereof, in combination with a rim having flanges along each edge, and the central portion between the flanges thickened, the ends of the spokes being secured to the flanges of the rim.
4. The combination with a single-piece tubular hub and spokes formed integrally, as set forth, of a strengthening-band provided at each edge with a flange, and aflixed to the hubpiece and spokes, substantially as shown and described.
5. A sheet-metal wheel or pulley having a single-piece tubular hub and spokes formed integrally, the spokes radiating from each ed go of the hub; a rim provided with inwardly-projecting flanges at each edge; a flanged strengthening-band eneireing the hub, and a bushing within the hub, substantially as set forth.
6. In a sheet-metal wheel or pulley, a series of spokes formed integrally with a singlepieee tubular hub and radiating from each edge thereof, in combination with a rim having inwardly-projecting flanges at each edge to which the ends of the spokes are riveted, said rim being perforated, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me at New York this 12th day of July, 1902.
