SPECIFICATION forming part vof Letters Patent No. 779,349, dated January 3, 1905. Application filed August 24, 1904. Serial No. 221,978.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HERBERT CoL- LIER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Joplin, in the county of lJasper and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Engine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to asteam-engine having an oscillating piston arranged in a suitable chest or cylinder and joined by a connecting-rod with a crank-shaft, so as tol rotate the shaft upon the oscillation of lthe piston. The chest or cylinder is provided with feed and exhaust ports controlled by a slide or other valve driven from eccentrics on the crank-shaft.
The invention actually consists in certain peculiar features of construction and the relative arrangement of parts, which will be fully set forth hereinafter and then pointedout in the claim.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawing, showing as an example the preferred embodiment of the invention, in which like characters of reference indicate correponding parts in both views, and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation taken through one of the cylinders on essentially the line 1 1 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the engine.
As shown in Fig. 2, the type of engine here illustrated is provided with two cylinders 10, which, as illustrated in Fig. 1, are essentially segmental in cross-sectional form and through which a shaft 11 extends. These two cylinders are divided from each other, and in each is located a fiat piston 12, having a hub 14 turning freely on the shaft 11, so that the pistons may oscillate back and forth in the cylinders around the centers of said shafts. The edges of the pistonsand the hubs thereof are provided with suitable packings to make steam-tight connections between the parts.
The cylinders 10 are supported on a suitable bed 15, and on this bed a crank-shaft 16 is also carried. The cranks of this shaft are quartered on the shaft, and to said cranks are joined connecting rods 17, which extend through openings 18 in the cylinders upward into connection with the under sides of the pistons, as illustrated. Mounted on top of the cylinders are steam-chests 19, in which feed-pipes 2O extend. In the cylinders are formed feed-ports 21 and exhaust-ports 22, both of these ports communicating with the steam-chests and the former ports communicating with the respective cylinders, while the latter ports communicate with an exhaustpipe 23. (Best shown in Fig. 2.) Slide or other valves 24 command the ports 21 and 22, and the stems 25 of said valves are connected to crank-arms 26 on a valve-shaft 27, mounted, preferably, on top of the engine, as shown, and having cranks 28 at their ends, to which crank-rods 29 are attached. The rods 29 extend downward to eccentrics 30 on the shaft 16, and in this manner a rocking movement is imparted to the shaft 27, and from this shaft thle slide-valves are operated characteristical y.
The valves 24 being properly adjusted a portion of the engine is started when steam is supplied tothe chests. The ports 21 will be uncovered to allow the steam to pass into the cylinders, thus throwing down the pistons. As the pistons begin their return movement the ports 21 and 22 are placed in communication, and the steam is exhausted out through the pipe 24. Any number of cylinders may be employed together in this manner, and the engine so constructed makes an extremely simple yet powerful apparatus.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hencel consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claim.
