To forin the connection with the indicating-dial P: Supposing the dial to more insteadof the pointer B,
said dial having, as is usual, suitable divisions marked on its face. The wheel J carries or is connected with a bevel-wheel, M, arranged to gear with a bevel-wheel or pinion, N, that operates 'asthe driver to the dial, and whereby a difierent velocity may be given to the latter, accordingly as the wheels M and N vary in diameter,
than that which is attainable from the wheel J direct. This difierence may be in favor either of an increased or reduced speed to the dial, but preferably the former, to. counteract in a measure the very slow movement of the wheel J relatively to the handle G or its shaft g, and measuring-device operated thereby.
The bevel-wheel or pinion N may be fitted to turn loosely on its shaft, m, that, being stationary, answers to carry the pointer R- and the dial P, also he made to turn freely round the some shaft with a spring,-s, or springs, interposed between it and thewheel N, and operating to press the dial'upor against an outside shoulder to the shaft, by which arrangement thedial, though driven, through frictional pressure of the spring by the wheel N, as required in the action of the indicator, is made capable, by turning it direct, of independent rotation, to vary its set or adjustmcnt'relotively to the pointer, accordingly as new or varied indications are required, and whereby the dial may rapidly be brought back to'its original position or set for a fresh measurement after a previous quantity has been run'ofi from the faucet, and this without disconnecting parts, or otherwise than applying the hand to the dial to turn it, and without breaking the gear of the latter with its driving-wheel, so thaton removing the'hand-fr om the dial after adjustment, it is in working connection with the gear operated by the measuring-device. p
' What is here claimed, and desired to be scouted by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with a rotary measuring and drawing-device, 0, arranged in the chamberB of the faucet A, and turned from the outside by crankorhandleG, of the fast and loose differential wheels I J, pinion K, carried by the handlennd'wheels M N, or their equivalents, for operating the dial P, substantially as shown and'desci'ibed. v
2. The dial P, hung for independent action, as described, and for free rotation with the wheel N, by which it is driven by frictional gear 'withthe latter, through a spring or springs interposed between said wheel and dial, essentially as specified. v
