WILLIAM M. POTTER, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO E. O. STEARNS & (10., OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
SAW-VISE SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,605, dated December 27, 1904.
. Application filed May 5,1902. Serial No. 105,944.
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILLIAM M. POTTER, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saw-Vise Supports,
of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates particularly to a sawvise; and it consists in a simple means for adjustably securing the vise in position on any suitable support, so that the saw may easily be adjusted in various convenient positions for filing.
The invention consists, essentially, of a clamping-piece to be secured on the bench, a semispherical boss on the clamping-piece, a cup-shaped piece or vise-cup carrying the vise fitted to the boss,a second clam ping-cup fitting over the first cup, and a thumb-screw to engage with the clamping-cup and the boss, whereby the visecup and the vise carried thereon are clamped securely in position.
My invention will be understood by reference to the drawings herewith, in which the same reference-numerals indicate the same parts in all the figures.
Figures I and II are side elevations of my invention, showing the saw-vise in two positions. Figs. III and IV are top plans illustrating lateral adjustment of the vise. Fig. V is a vertical section of the important parts of the clamping mechanism.
In the figures, 1 indicates the fixed jaw of the saw-vise, and 2 an integral arm, to which the outer jaw 3 is pivoted at 4 and operated by lever 5.
7 is the clamp or clamping-piece, having upper and lower jaws 8 9, to one of which is fitted a suitable thumb-screw 10 for securing to the bench or other suitable support. This clamp is formed with reinforcing-ribs l1 and with a rounded boss 12, preferably substantially semispherical. To this boss is fitted the vise-cup 14, perforated at and provided with the integral arm 16, arranged substantially at right angles.
The saw-vise may be integral with the arm or connected thereto by any suitable means, such as the bolt 17, engaging with a slot 18 in the vise.
To the vise-cup is fitted the clamping-cup 20, and the parts are all clamped firmly in position by means of the thumb-screw 21. By this simple means the vise may be firmly clamped in any desired position and the thumb screw easily loosened, so that the vise may be adjusted vertically or laterally or at any angle to bring the saw into position most convenient to be filed. By this construction the support for the vise is arranged near to its jaws instead of at its base, whereby the vibration is much reduced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In the support for a saw-vise or similar device, the combination with the clamp having a roundedboss on its upper end, and means to secure the clamp on a suitable support, of a concave clamping element formed to fit on top of the boss, and a thumb-screw to engage with the boss and the clamping element, whereby a part arranged between them and formed substantially to fit both may be secured firmly in position.
' 2. The combination in a saw-vise clamp, of a clamping-piece having a rounded boss on its upper end, means to secure the clamping-piece on a suitable support, a vise-cup fitted to rest on top of the boss, a clamping-cup fitted to the vise-cup, and a thumb-screw engaging with the clamping-cup and the boss, to secure the saw-vise firmly and adjustably in position.
3. The combination in a saw-vise clamp, of a clamping piece having parallel jaws, a thumb-screw fitted to one of the jaws to secure the clamping-piece in suitable position,a solid, integral boss on the clamping-piece, a visecup fitted thereto, an integral arm on the visecup arranged at substantially right angles thereto, a bolt to connect the saw-vise to the arm, a clamping-cup fitting over the vise-cup, said boss and the engaging faces of the two cups being spherically formed, and a thumbscrew engaging with the boss and the clamping-cup and extending through an opening in the vise-cup to clamp the parts securely in position.
4. The combination in a saw-vise clamp, of a clamping-piece, means to secure the clamping-piece on a suitable support, an integral boss on the clamping-piece, a vise-cup fitted to the boss, an arm on the vise-cup, a vise, means to connect the vise adjustably to the arm, a clamping-cup adapted to fit over the vise-cup, said boss and engaging faces of the tWo cups being spherically formed, and a thumb-screw adapted to engage With the boss and clamping-cup to secure the vise adjustably in position.
5. The combination in a saw-vise clamp, of a clamping piece having parallel jaws, a thumb-screw fitted to one of the jaws to secure the clamping-piece to the bench, a solid,
integral boss on the clamping-piece, a visecup fitted to the boss, an integral arm on the vise-cup arranged at substantially right angles thereto, a bolt to connect the saw-vise to the arm, the saw-vise having a slot to fit the bolt, a clamping-cup fitting over the vise-cup, said boss and the engaging faces of the two cups being spherically formed, and a thumbscrew engaging With the boss and the clamping-cup and extending through an enlarged opening in the vise-cup to clamp the parts securely in position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
WILLIAM M. POTTER.
