Description

GEORGE 1in-PERKINS AND VS. F. GIBBS, or HOLYOKE, MASSaeHUSETTS.
'Letters .Patent No. 77,651, dated .Mayv 5, 1868; mtedteci' April 28,1868.
' IMPRovED Doon-FASTWEB.

`TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CQNCERN:
Be it known 'that we, GEORGE F. PER-Kms and S. F. Gns, both of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden,
and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Door-Fastener and Match, y
Safe; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact' description thereo f,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part et this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of onrinvention.
Figure`2 is a. side view with the cover removed.
Figure 3 is' an end view of the fastener with the cover removed.
Y' Figure 4 is a horizontal section through line E F of iig. 2; and
Figure 5 is -a' side view of'the catch. v.
The nature of our'invention consists in constructing a catchwith a screw-thread eut upon` one end, to
operate in a case, one pari. of said case serving as a. nut to turn upon said catch, in such manner that'it will be adjustable to secure'oi' fasten doors of different thicknesses; and so arranging said case and catch witha cover that it may be easily and conveniently carried in the pocket, to be used when required, said case furnishing suiiicient space'to also serve the purpose of a pocket match-box.
. To enable'others skilled in the art to make and use our i nve n'tion,we will proceed to describe its construction` and mode of opera-tion. v
In theA drawings, B the case,'which may becylindrical inform, having at one end, It, the nut b attached, through which, in its centre, is a. hole, g, having a female screw-thread cut in it.
The bar C isxmade ilat, having, at one end, thefcatch' or projection-d, the other end of. the b ar C being made round, and having the male screw-thread, e, vcnt'npcn it, which is mad'eto fit and works in, the female screw-thread cut in thehole'g. Upon`the inside of the case B is the slight projection or shoulder a, which servesns a stop for the end of the cove-r A when it is inserted in the ease'B.
The'ease B-may have the ornamented annular projection z', to` give the case B additional strength; and the end, L, of the case B, and-also the nut b may be ornamented withany desirable device-to' add vto its appearance.
The ca'tch d maybe made sharp at the end, to facilitate its entrance into the wood of the door-frame'when there',
is nomortisc' into which to insert it.
4Having thus describedl its construction, we will proceed to describe its operation.
The case B having'been iirst removed from the rod (hier withdrawn from the catch d a. sufficient distance, the door to be secured is slightly opened, and the catch, ci, insert-ed i,n the socketor mortise of the door-catch, and 4the door is then shut, leaving the catch d in the mortise, yandlthc bar projecting bctweerrthe door and its'frame, upon the inside, -and't-hecase B is thenjscrewed on to the har C, until the end, .Z, ofthe case B comes against the door. This fastens the door rmly and securely, so that it cannot be opened from the outside.
By making the case in this way, sufficient sp'aco is ail`orded in 'said case to serve a-s-a receptacle formatchcs, when desirable, and.l)y varying the size and form'ot' said case, a convenient match-boicot` any capacity is readily secured. v f
Our invention' is cheap in its manufacture, is free from complication, presents no sharpangles to wear the pocket in carrying it, and is adapted for use both as a prtahle match-box, and in fastenjngfdoors of different thicknesses, as it is adjustable-in its operatiom We are vaware that various devices have been` u'sed for this'purpose of fastening doors, as in lLetters"Patent granted to J'. B. Frazer, vdated September 30, 1862,1and .numbered 36,563; andalso in Letters Patent granted to L. C. Bignall, dated May 31, 1864, and numbered 42,924; hut our invention differs from said devices very materially, and we disclaim anyand every part of Said devices, irrcspcctiveof our construction and varrangement; but, having described our invention,
What we claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, isv
A combined adjustable doorfastener and' match-safe, consisting of the case B,cover A, and bar C, the whole constructed and operating substantiallyas described Witness our hands, this 25th day of-July, 1867.
