Description
G. E. CLARKE.
Axle Box and Skein.
Patented4 May 5, 868.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GREVILLE E. CLARKE, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVED SKEINAND B`OX FOR AXLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 77,585, dated May 5, 1868. I
To all whom 'it may concern.-
-Be it known that I, GREVILLE E. CLARKE, of Racine, in the county of Racine, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in skein-Box for Axles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the axle of a vehicle, and is made of any suitable material, and substantially in the form shown in the drawings, the under side of the arm being provided with a suitable groove, in which the brace-rod E is placed.
B represents a thimble-skein made of cast metal, so as to fit over the end or arm of the axle A, and provided with a recess in its nnder side and a groove, under the collar, in which I cast box-metal C for the bearing, and then turn the Whole down true. The thimble or adjustable arm B has also a tongneJL, made dovetail in shape, and the edges of the recess are also of similar shape, so that when the box-metal C is cast therein it is held firmly in its place.
D represents the box made to fit on or over the skein B, and is provided with a recess or chamber, r, to hold oil or grease for lubricating the axle or bearings. The box D is also provided with ribs g g, to increase thc strength thereof and hold the same from turning in the hub.
E represents a brace-rod extending from- Having thus fully described my invention,`
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rIhe skein B, having a recess on its under part Iilled with box-metal C, and provided with a groove, x, and tongue, and used in combination with the box D, as constructed, and y the rod E connected through the axle, as speciiied, all constructed and used substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of February, 1868.
GREVILLE E. CLARKE.
