To all whom, 116 ntrty (iOIMJGTTLI Be it known that l, JONATHAN J onnson, a citizen of the United States, residing in Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Mas sachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Regulating-Valves, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters on the drawing representing like parts.
The present invention relates to a pressureregulating valve, and is designed especially for the control of illuminating-gas, the invention being embodied in a novel construction and arrangement whereby the valve may be adjusted for a certain pressure, being also antomatic in its adjustment where the pressure is variable.
In accordance with the invention the valve,
which is in the nature of a gravity-valve adapted to be opened by the pressure of the gas or other fluid when the supply-outlet is opened, is wholly contained within a casing, the valve resting upon a valve-seat at the inlet and controlling the flow of gas from said inlet to the valve-chamber, which is provided with a suitable outlet leading to the deliver vpipes.
The invention is further embodied in aconstruction whereby the center of gravity of the valve is automatically shifted in accordance with the position of the valve, so that as the pressure behind the valve decreases with re lation to the pressure beyond it the tendency of the valve to close by gravity is correspond ingly decreased.

The presslire-regulating valve is shown as a disk a, contained within a valve-shell A and normally resting upon a valve-seat A within the shell, the said seat controlling the inletpassage A, through which the controlled by the valve enters the shell, which is provided. with the outlet-passage A, leading to the system which is to be supplied. The valve is normally held in position by gravity and is weighted sufliciently to remain closed when all the burners in the system to be supplied are shut ofl, so that there no preponderating pressure in the inlet portion, the weight, however, being insutiicient to prevent the opening adjustable weighted member (7/ which tends to hold the valve closed, it being obvious that the closing tendency may be varied by shifting the position of the weighted member a with relation to the valvedisk upon which it is supported. F or this purpose the said member a is shown as held in a yoke or support (/I by means of a set-screw (l/ and is adjustable in said yoke when the set-screw of has been released by means oi an adjustingscrew 0, whereby the said weighted member can be shifted with relation to the valve-disk, thereby changing the position of the center of gravity of the valve. In addition to such initial adjustment, however, the valve is arranged to be automatically adjustaliile in accordance with the conditions of consumption and supply, so that as the pressure decreases at the outlet end of the shell the valve will open wider, closing automatically to cut down the pressure as the burners are turned ofl. This is accomplished by providing the valvedisk with means for automatically shifting the center of gravity as the position 01 the valve varies, such center of gravity being moved toward the pivotal support as the valve opens.

hat I claim is 1. In a pressure-regulating device, the combination with a valve-shell provided with an inlet and an outlet, the said inlet being pro vided with a valve-seat within the shell; a valve maintained by gravity against said seat; and
means for shifting the center of gravity of said valve in accordance with the position thereof with relation to said seat, as set forth.
2. In a pressure-regulating valve, the combinationwith a valve-shell having an inlet and an outlet; a disk valve cooperating with a seat at said inlet, said disk valve being pivotally supported with relation to said seat; and a weighted member supported on said valve and adjustable thereon with relation to the pivotal support for said valve; the weight being loosely contained in said weighted member, substantially as described.
