Description

Patented May 5, 1868.

Lettere .Patent No. 77,523, dated May 5,' 1868.

IMPROVEMENT In FIELD-Routes.
ttettetnlmfmrt it iutime zitsts Event mit getting pitt mit: stmt.
'I0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CQNGEB'N'; -Bo it known that I, D. R. PRINDLE, of East Bethany,in the oountyof Genesee, and State of New Ylork, have invented an improved FieldiRoller; end I do hereby declare that the'following 'is'a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaeeompanying drawings making part et' this specification- -v Figure 1 boing n vetical'section through theccntre of the rollers.
Figure 2,`a vertical section in o. plano indicated by the line z z, tig.l.
Like letters designato corresponding parts in both figures.
I moke the roller.in two `(or more)`soctions, A B; and the first feature ofV my improvement consists in the employment of ajointed axis or pivot, there being a section, a and b, respectively for each section A, and of' the roller, and jointed together, at m n, between the two sections of the roller. This jointing together of th' sections of the axis, while it allows the sections of the rolleltto ada-pt themselves to the uneven surface of the ground, causes Ithe said sections always to move together, up ori-down, and to ac t in harmony with each other and the whole construction and arrangement nre simple and durable.
The bearings c c of the frame Cin-which the'journals ott the outer ends of the jointed-axis tnrn,`:n-e somewhat conical or tlnring inward, as shown, in order to allow the vibratory movement of the a-xis, us'ab'ove Aset forth.
In connection with the'jointedaxi's of the' rol-ler, I employ 'a vertically-oblong bearing, d, timeframe, for tho axes between the sections of th'o roller, so as to allow a free vertical movement of the jointed axis, while is rigid and nnbending horizontally',.so that the sections' of the roller pass rmly over' the. ground, while they adjust themselves to tho'irregulariti'es of the grouitds surface. In'stead of a single guide or bearing, d, there may bo two, 4one for each section of thoaxis, but this is not necessary.
The other parts of the rollerv need not be of unusual construction, and require no description.
What I cln'im as my invention, n n'd desireto secure by Letters Patent, is`
The jointed ax-is or pivot a b, for two or more -sections, A B, of* a. roller, substantially as andi-'or the purpose -herein specied.-
I also claim the vertically-oblong or upright bearing d, between the sections of the roller, substantially as set forth.
IValso` claim the combination o f the jointed axis or pyot, andthe vertically-slo'ttedror oblong bearing, so as to produce n roller whichwillndept itself vup and down to the unevenness o-fthe ground. but will. be rigid in a 'horizontal direction,,substantially as herein specilied.
The above specification of my improved ie'ld-roller' signed by me, this eighth day of`Febr'uary,1868.
