ToALi. WHOM IT, MAY cononnm Be it known that I, JOIIN- B. COOK, of Lyons, county of Clinton, and- State of Iowa, have invented :t new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Brakes;" and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings', and letters of reference marked thereon,

in which- Fignre 1`represents a side elevation, Fignre 2 a plan, and I Figura 3 a-rear elevation of my brake. The na'tnre of this'invention consists in the employment of a self-acting and adjustable brake, When arranged .and constructedsuhstantially in the manner hereinafter set forth.

i Attached on either. side of the' tongue D, to the double-tree N, is one end of the chains L L, having their other ends'secured to lever J, as clearly seen in fig. 2.

K designates a long metal red, secured at one end to'the under side of leve'r A, and fastened, at its opposite end, 'to the under side of lever J.

lc k also designate two metal rods, each being connected, at one end, with the brakes H H, and-fastened, at their other ends, to the lower part of lever J. i

the yoke-piece I will, consequently, be thrown back, and the lever A, whiehis secured to said yoke-piece by link 7), will also be drawn,,thus operating the rod K, which will coinmunicate motion to lever J, and said lcver will operate thcrods o 0 and lc lc, and thus cau'se the brakes H H to press doivn the Wheels. When it i's desired to hack 'the liorses, I use a key, y, which I insert in an aperture or hole made' in the double'tree and tongue, and, by means of said key, the bralces will be prevented from being o perated, and the Wheels left free to Work.

What I claim ns new, and desire to secu're by Letters Patent, is--- 'l'ongue 0, yoke-piece B, lever A, rod K, Chains L L and O O, lerer J, brakes H H, and double-free D, all arranged and'opernted as and for the purpose described.
