TO WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that. I, JAIRUS BROWN, of Portland, in the' county'of Ionia, and State of Michigan, have invented anew and useful Improvement ina Swiftand Reel; andI do declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to Athe accompanying drawings, and tothe letters. of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification;v v
Figure 1 represents my invention, when standing upright, and to be usedas a swift.
Figure 2 represents the same, with the arms in another position, when used as areel.
The same letters indicate like parts in each ligure. I
The nature of this invention consists in arranging a series of adjustable arms, sothat the apparatus can be used either as a swift or reel, and when not in use, it can be folded up into a small compass, and laid away in any convenient place.
In order to do this, I construct a jaw, A, in the usual-form, provided with set-screw B, for the purposeof attaching the apparatus' to a propel-'table or shelf. Theupp'er end of this jaw-frame isprovitled with a proper joint, C, to Whichis attached the bar D,'and Whichwill allow the bar to be moved from a horizontal to a perpendicular position. The loiver part of this bar has a screw-thread, E, cut upon it, `which, when the bar is horizontal, so that the apparatus can be used as a reel, meshes into the wheel F, to which are attached the springr G, and suitable mechanism to mark the knots of yarn or thread as it is reeled. H is a loose sleeve, fitting upon the square partof the bar D. This sleeve H is adjustable to any part of the square part of said bar, by means of the set-screw I. J is another loose sleeve, also fitting upon the bar D, and which is also adjustable upon the bar D by the set-screw K. The arms L are pivoted to proper ears upon the sleeve- J, at their inner ends, and to the bars M at their outer ends. N are properbraces extending from the outer arms, L, to which they are pivoted to proper ears upon the-sleeve H, to which they are also pivoted. These braces also act as levers to open or close the'arms L.
. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the adjustable sleeves H and J, arms L, bars M, braces N, bar D, having a screwthread, E, and being hinged at C with the holder A, 4wheel F, and spring G, all constructed and arranged suhstantially'as and for the purposes described. l
JAIRUS BROWN.
