WASHBASlN-FIXTURE AND BASIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,408, dated October 25, 1904.
Application filed February 1Q, 1904:. Serial No. 192,941. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. MOORE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of New York city, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lVashbasin-Fixtures and Basins, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive washbasin-fixture and basin.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a central vertical section of the invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the operative elements of the fixture that are beneath the basin. Fig. 3 shows a central vertical section of the sliding lifting-plug and appurtenance. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of Fig. 3.
1 represents a basin.
2 is the basin waste-coupling divided in two sections, the socket in which the stopper 3 operates in forming the top section and .fiange that supports the coupling to the basin.
4 shows a strainer secured on the spindle of the stopper 3 in such a position and shape as to allow the beveled edge of the sliding plug 8 to get under it and lift the stopper 3 from' its seat.
5 shows a knob at the end of the spindle of the stopper and is situated on the spindle, so that it will be under the sliding plug 8 when the said plug is pushed in and the stopper 3 is up, and thereby prevent the removal of the stopper while it is in that position.
6 is a branch on the coupling 2. 7 is agroove therein.
8 represents a sliding plug having a forked end of sufficient inclination to slide smoothly against the under surface of the strainer 1 and lift it and the stopper 3 when inward pressure is exerted on the push-rod.
9 is a pin on the plug 8, that fits in the groove 7 and keeps the plug in the right position. 10 is a metal washer let up into the recessed end of branch 6 and is intended for the packing-ring 11 to lie against and be distended against the surfaces of the recess and push-rod 13 when the packing-nut is screwed up to form a water-tight joint.
17 is a crank adjustably secured on the rod 19 and having a pin 20 on it to engage the hole in the fitting 16.
19 represents a rod extending down from the handle to the push-rod.
21 is a tube to guide the rod and keep it steady, and 18 is a metal ring secured rigidly on the rod 19 by a screw 26 directly under the guide 21, so as to prevent the handle and rod from being lifted by the user of the basin.
2'? shows the handle of the device recessed at the under side, so as to allow the upper edge of the escutcheon or covering-plate to enter, and thereby prevent dirt from getting inside of the covering-plate and around the rod 19.
The covering-plate is recessed in the top of it enough to allow the pin 28 to operate in and permit of the handle being turned about one-quarter way around. The pin 28 is fastened rigidly in the rod 19 and is kept in place by the metal ring 18.
22 shows the overflow-channel.
- 23 is an aperture through the earthenware basin above the overflow-inlet and flares outward from the basin.
2 1 represents a strainer held in place over the overflow-inlet by the spring-prongs 25. This strainer is to prevent small articles and soap from floating or otherwise getting into the overflow-channel, and the novel way of fastening it on the overflow-inlet removes to a great extent the liability of its being taken off in public places except by the attendant,
who may remove it when necessary to insert a swab in the overflow-channel by entering a knife-blade or the like between the strainer and the earthenware at the space that is formed in the strainer expressly for the purpose of entering a tool.
The advantages are, first, the hinge-joint 14 allows the rod to work freely in the passage in the nut 12 without causing any strain on the branch 6 and consequent liability of loosening the coupling 2 in the basin; second, easy method of adjusting and attaching the push-rod.
Having described the invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a washbasin or bath, a basin wastecoupling 2 having a stopper 3 and an inlet branch 6 at the side, a beveled forked plug 8 operating within the branch 6, a washer 1O lying against the ledge of the recess in the branch 6, a packing 11 within the recess and inclosed by the nut 12, a push rod 13, a hinge-joint 14, a push-rod 15 having an adjustable extension 16 secured on the adjustable crank 17 in a manner to form a swivel, the adjustable crank 17, a rod 19, a guide 21 and a handle 27 substantially as shown and described.
2. In a washbasin or bath, a coupling 2 having a stopper 3, and a branch 6, a nut 12 wages screwed upon said branch, a beveled sliding plug 8 operating within the said branch 6, an extension adjustable push-rod composed of sections 13, 15 and 16 and a hinge-joint 14 to allow of flexibility in the said push-rod between the nut 12 and the hinge-joint on the crank 17, an adjustable crank 17, a rod 19, and a handle 27 attached to the rod 19.
3. A wash hand-basin or bath, a coupling 2 having a stopper 3, and abranch 6, a groove 7 cut in the wall of the branch 6, a beveled sliding plug 8 having a pin 9 on it operating within the groove 7, a washer 1O lying against a ledge in the recessed end of the branch 6 to confine the plug 8 within the branch 6 and for the packing-ring 11 to lie against, a nut 12, a push-rod 13 within the nut 12 and attached to the plug 8, a hinge-joint 14, a section of the push-rod 15 having an adjustable extension-rod 16, an adjustable crank 17 secured to the extension-rod 16 in a manner to form a hinge to operate laterally in conjunction with the hinge-joint 14, a rod 19 within aguide 21 and a handle 27 attached to the rod 19 substantially as shown and described.
