WHISTLE..
*elle S'tlgihnle annui tu in tigris lttas. nimt branding putt nf tte; stun.-
Be it known that we,lPATI`tICK SLEVIN, JOHN SLEVJN, VandVV FRANCIS SLEVIN, ofthe city, county, and' State of New York,'l1ave inventeda new and improved Whistle; ,and we dohereby declare that the following is' a full,
.clearQz-...nd'cxact description thereof, which will'enable those sliilled'in thc'art to'make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification., "I I The present invention relates to thatV class of whistles in the sounding ot' which they are placed upon the tongue within the mouth, with the reed-.of the whistle next to the teeth; and the inven'tionconsists in making the holder for the r`eed of a bow-shape, and of any shitable material, with `the reed secured to such bow around its edges in any proper manner, butleft free. or exposed at one edge to the action of the tongue, mouth, and lips, for'produeing the desired whistling sound.' i
In.theaccompanying plate of drawings our improved whistle -is illustratcd Figure 1 being a plan or top view of the same,
Figure 2a section 'taken in 'the plane of the line' a: iig. 1, and
Figures 3 and 4 similar views to figs'. 1 and 2, but of the 'ld formzof that class'of whistles embraced in the present invention. K
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
, in` the drawings, represents the holder for the reed B to the whistle.
'lhis'hlder A is made of'a bow or curved shape, from end to end, and of India rubber, gutta perch z1,'bene,
- wood, or any other suitable material. v
The two ends C and side edges D to this holder A are grooved, and in them, by means of a metallic band, a, the reed B is secured with 'its side edge Zz free.
To use the whistle above described, place it on, with the reedv nextI to the tongue within thamouth, and with the free edge of the reed next to the teeth, ivhen,"blowing gently, the movement of the tip of the tongue, of
the mouth, and the quiver of the lips willproduce a.variety of notes and sounds that'by practice can be made to resemble or imitate the sounds of a mocking or other bird.
. In lieu of securing the reed to the holder in the manner above described, other Waysmaybe employed, as,
for instance, by making the bow or holder in two parts or sections hinged together, and closed upon opposite sides by. clasps, screws, or other suitable means, or by claspingthe reed .upon the holdci` with metal or other g' suitable clasps, bent around the edges of the bow, or by' tying it with a cord or other suitable means; 'and,
therefore, we do not intend to limit ourselves to any particular mode or means ot' fastening, the invention consisting in the combination of the bow-shaped holder with aA reed, made oi'. any suit-able material, such as goldbeaters skin,-in'a manner substantially as described.
It may be here observed that the reed, if so'desired, may be .hung to the holder or bow in such a mannerk that as one part has become'worn it may 'be adjusted to bring another part of .the reed in position for operation, as, for instance, by hanging the reed upon rollers.
We claim as new, and.` desire to secure by Letters' Patent- The combination of thebow-shaped holder and reed, substantially as end for the purpose described.
