INVENTOR BY 2% A ,V,
ATTORNEY UNITED STATES Patented October 25, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS A. CASEY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO MAN- HATTAN ELECTRICAL SUPPLY COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
RELAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,195, dated October 25, 1904.
Application filed March 16,1904. Serial No. 198,372. (No model.)
T0 on whom, it may concerns Be it known that I, THOMAS A. CAsnY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jerin order to secure satisfactory operation un-.
der varying atmospheric conditions to provide means for the relative adjustment of the armature and its operating-magnets.
The object of my invention is the provision of mechanism by which this result may be attained; and to this end my invention consists in the arrangement and combination of devices which in a preferred form 1 have illustrated in the drawings and set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a telegraphic relay embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a partial inverted plan showing the under side of the relay-support.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate like parts in all the views.
The armature, contacts, tension-adjusting devices, and binding-screws are of conventional form and require no detailed descrip tion.
The magnets 1 are at one end movably supported in a frame 2, which is formed with two circular apertures into which the ends of the magnets loosely fit. The opposite ends of the magnets are rigidly secured to the yoke 3 in the usual manner. I An arm 5, rigidly secured to the yoke 3, is provided with a screw-threaded boss 6 and with a depending extension 7, which projects through a slot 8 in the base 9. Slotted plates 11 and 12 are fastened to the base 9 above and below the slot 8. The edges of the arm 5 extend beyond the edges of the extension 7, and the steps thus formed rest on the upper surface of the plate 11 and furnish a support for this end of the magnets. The edges of the extension 7 fit closely against the sides of the slotted plates, and the lower end thereof, which is screw-threaded, carries a washer 14, held in place by the nut 15. Secured at one end to the extension 7 and at the other end to the under side of the base 9 are coil-springs 16, which tend to draw the magnets toward the armature. An adjusting-screw 18 is threaded in the boss 6 on the arm 5, and the inner end of the screw bears against the abutment 19.
By turning the screw 18 to the right the distance between the poles of the magnets 1 and the armature will be increased against the tension of the springs 16 and by turning the screw in the opposite direction (the springs holding the screw firmly'against the abutment 19) the distance will be diminished, the plates lland 12 furnishing not only a firm bearing for the arm 5, but also imparting a true rectilinear movement thereto and forming stops which limit the movement of the magnets and prevent the magnet-poles being carried into contact with the armature.
The springs 16 are in the preferred form of apparatus completely concealed under the base-board and in such a position that they cannot become jammed in adjusting the magnets.
Having thus shown and described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination in a relay of movablysupported magnets, an arm secured to the magnets, a slot in' the base through which the arm projects, an adjusting-screw threaded in said arm, an abutment for said screw and a spring connection between the arm and the base.
2. The combination in a relay of movablysupported magnets, an arm secured to the magnets, a slotted plate carried by the base through which the arm projects and which forms a limiting-stop for the arm, a screw threaded in said arm, an abutment for said a screw threaded in said arm and an abutment screw and a sprlng conneetlon between the for the screw.
