Description

Patented October 18, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.-
HARRISON W. PRICE, OF'PITTSBURG, 'PENNSYLVANIA SIGNAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,631, dated October 18, 1904.
Application led J' une 22, 1903. Serial No. 162,567. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, HARRISON W. PRICE, a
i citizen of theUnited States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented-a new and useful Improvement in Signals, of which improvement the following isa specification.
Thisinvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in railway danger-signals, and relates more particularly to that class of signals which are used at grade-crossings ings, which form a part of this specification,
wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout both views, in which- Figure l is a plan view showing the arrangement of my signal. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
- The reference-numeral 1 indicates the track, and 2 the alarm-signal station placed at one side thereof adjacent to the track at the .crossing. At a suitable distance from the crossing the operating mechanism is placed, the
said mechanism consisting ofthe trip-lever 3, which is secured to the rock-shaft 4L, preferably inside and close to the rail.- This triplever extends slightly above the rail in such a manner that the shaft .Lis rocked as each wheel of a train passes over and depresses the lever 3. The outer end of the shafthas an actuating-crank 5 secured to it, andthe shaft is mounted in bearings 6, secured to the ties. The signal-towerhas uprights 7 7, in the upper end of whichthe shaft l8, carrying the alarm-bell 8', is mounted, and a crank 9, secured to said shaft, is connected 'to the bell-crank 10 by the link 11. A spring 12 holds the bell in position to be 4operated and restores the parts to thei'roperative position after each operation of the parts. The bell-crank 10 is connected with the crank 5 full benefit of the movement of the crank 5.v
The operation of the device would be as follows: The wheels of a train passing over and depressing Vthe lever 3 will actuate the crank 5, thus tilting and ringing the bell through the medium of the rope, wire, `bellcrank, lever, and crank. f
While I have herein shown yand described my invention in detail, it will be obvious that various slight changes may be made in the same without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of the type set forth consisting of a rock-shaft, with bearings therefor supported by the cross-ties, said shaft carrying a trip on its one end located adjacent one of the rails, and a crank on its other end, uprights mounted adjacent the track and at a point a considerable distance away from said rockshaft, with a shaft carried by the uprights at the upper ends thereof, an alarm-bell mounted on the shaft, and a crank carried by the shaft, a link connected to the crank, a bellcrank supported bythe uprights adjacent the lower end thereof, and having one of its ends mally extending in the same plane throughout..
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name 1n the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' HARRISON W. PRICE.' In presence of- F. O. HENZI, H. J. LEVIS.
