Description

No. 771,659. PATENTED OCT. 4, 1904. H. B. NICHOLS.
GARMENT HOOK. APPLICATION rum) MAY 26, 1904.
NO MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented October 4, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
GARMENT-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION o g pa of Letters Patent No. 771,659, dated October 4, 1904.
Application filed May 26, 1904. Serial No. 209,853. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARLEY Baooxs NICH- oLs, a citizen of the United States of America, and aresident of Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to that type of hook-and-eye fastenings in which the hook member is formed of resilient plate metal and provided with means for preventing accidental disengagement of the eye member; and the present improvement has for its object to provide a simple and eflicient structural formation of the hook member, whereby a substantial attachment of said hook member is had and'with which a minimum thickness of the hook member is attained, while permitting the normal swaying movement of one member in relation to the other in actual use, all as will hereinafter more fully appear and be more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrative of the present invention, Figure l is a perspective view of the blank previous to bending it into the present hook member. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the hook member as formed by bending the aforesaid blank. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the hook member. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the hookand-eye members in their engaged condition.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the base portion. and 2 the hook or tongue portion, of the present hook member, formed by the usual stamping operation from a sheet of spring metal, preferably tempered steel, and in the form of a flat blank which is subsequently folded or bent to constitute the completed hook member.
3 is the usual hump formed in the base 1 and underlying the tongue portion 2, as shown, to constitute an impediment to the accidental disengagement of the eye member 4 by the usual swaying and like movements of the one member with relation to the other in actual use.
5 is the usual central rear attaching-eye of the hook member.
6 represents lateral extensions near the forward end of the base member 1, in which are formed the forward attaching opening or eye of the hook member.
A material part of the present invention consists in providing the lateral extensions 6 with a single connecting-opening 7 of an elongated form which extends transversely across the base member 1, as shown more particularly in Fig. at of the drawings. Such formation and arrangement of the elongated slot 7 in adjacent relation to the bend which connects the tongue to the base member of the hook admits of the tongue portion 2 being arranged quite close to the base portion 1 by providing space for the free movement of the engaging bar of the eye member 4 in the normal swaying of either member with relation to the other in actual use. The above-described structural formation and arrangement of the slot 7 with the upper angular edges 8 presented by the same, affords an efficient auxiliary stop for resisting an accidental backward disengagement of the eye member fromthe present hook member.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a garment-hook, formed of resilient plate metal and comprising a tongue portion and a base portion provided with a rear attaching-eye, a hump underlying the tongue portion, forward lateral extensions and a connecting-opening between said extensions of an elongated form which extends transversely across the base member, in near relation to the bend which connects the tongue to the base portion of the hook, as described and for the purpose set forth.
. Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 19th day of May, 1904.
HARLEY BROOKS NICHOLS. I
