Letter Patent No. 76,966, dated April 21, 1868 IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, JOHN R. AcKEnMnN, EDWARD BKCAMPBELL, and NIRAM O. GOLDEN, of Dobbs Ferry in .the county of Wcstchester, and State of New York, have inrented a 'new and improved Lamp-Burner; and we db hereby declare that the-following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that-class of lamps in which kerosene-oil orother hydrocarbonoils or liquids are burned,. and which require a chimney tosurrou'ndthe flame in order to produce a perfect combustion, and prevent smoking. And it consists in the application and arrangement of a double cone, or cons and cylinder, which surrounds the wick-tube of the lamp, whereby'the flame is supplied with atmosphcric air or oxygen in sufficient quantity to produce perfect combustion, and'prevent smoking, without the use of a chimney;

The curve at the .upper end of the cone conducts the current of air, which ascends within the cone, directly to the'wick andfiame ofthe lamp at the base of thefiame. v I

In this example'of our'invcntion, the pointsf of the cylinder D are attached to the cone G, which leaves .open spaces between the points for the admission of air.
The cylinder is-also perforated below the conical top for the purpose of giving access to the air.
The air thus admitted within the cylinder D, is, by the conical top E, brought in direct contact with the flame of the lamp. This cylinder D maybe constructed in different ways or shapes, and attached to theicone. Olin a difi'crent manner from that shown.' 7
The perforations may be dispensed with, if desired, and other and additional provision may bemadc for the admission of air at its lower end or through its sides.
We are aware that many experiments have been made, (we have made many ourselves,) with a view to doing away with the-very objectionable lamp-chimney, but hitherto 'no plan,.(as far as we are aware,) has proved successful. A
We can account for this in no way but upon the supposition that the carbon of the burning oil and the oxygen of the atmosphere have notbeen combined in-pr'opcr proportions nor properlyunited to produce perfect combustion.
- We, in the course of our experiments, have found that by extending the wick-tube, and surrounding it with i a double cone, or cone and cylinder, or with two cylinders arranged substantiallyas we-havc described, we accomplish the object sought. 1
By the arrangement shown, an upward current of air is produced which not only supplies the flame with the requisite quantity of oxygen, but supplies it at the right time andplace.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the perforated cylinder D with relation to the opcmbottomed cone'U, conical top E and wick-tube A, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
