PATENT @EEICE.
DOOR-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,718, dated August 30, 1904.
Application filed November 21,1903. Serial No. 182,151. (No model.)
To rtZZ whom, it ntrty concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW O. AUsTIN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Hud-.
son, in the county of Lincoln and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Springs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door-springs; and the object of the invention is to so construct and arrange the spring that it will be prevented from rubbing against the edge of the door, and, further, to gain a purchase by means of which the door can be closed by the spring even when the door is swung open so as to be parallel with the wall.
My invention consists of the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, particularly pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the practical application of my device. Fig. 2is a plan view of my device, the door and doorcasing beingshown in section. Fig. 3 is a similar view, the door being shown in an open position. Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of my device.
In the drawings, A represents a door hinged in the usual manner. To the casing of the door on the side opposite the hinges is secured one end of a coil-spring B, the other end being secured to the door, the said spring being in practice about sixteen inches long. Secured on the door in the horizontal plane of the spring B is a plate (3, which plate is the fixed leaf of a hinge. The free leaf 0 is bifurcated or slotted, as shown at C the ends of the slotted portion being bent or curved over to form bearings for apintle, on which is journaled a roller 0 the periphery of the roller being grooved. This free leaf C normally eX- tends towardthe end of the spring B, which is secured to the door-casing, the roller being adjacent to if not in actual contact with the spring. As the door is opened and the spring stretched the leaf C under tension of the spring bearing on the roller will be thrown into a position parallel to the door and projecting horizontally beyond the same, as clearly shown in Fig.3. This will hold the spring out from the edge of the door and not only prevent it from bearing against the edge,
thus injuring the spring, but will also afford a leverage, so that no matter what position the door is placed in the spring will be able to return'it to its normal or closed position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A device of the kind described comprising a coil-spring adapted to be secured, one end to the door and the other to the door-casing, to hold a door closed, a hinged plate carried by the door, and a roller carried by the plate and adapted-to engage the spring.
2. The combination with a door having a coil-spring, one end of said spring being secured to the door and the opposite end to the door-jamb, of aplate hinged to the door in the horizontal plane of the spring,'and a roller carried by said plate and adapted to engage the spring and hold same away from the edge of the'door when the latter is open.
