LOOSE-LEAF BOOK- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 67,940, dated August 16, 1904.
Application filed August 24, 1903. Serial No. 170,637. No model.) I
To all whom, it may RUIZ/0077b.
. tween a roller and a flat surface or between Be it known that I, FREDERICK GRIMBIE, a flat surfaces'and I do not confine myself to I citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ledger and other books made of loose leaves held in binderframes.
The object of the invention is to provide a loose leaf book with leaves which will fit snugly together at their bound edges when the book is opened and at the same time spring up like a spring-back bound book and lie open flatly; and a further object is to strengthen the leaf at its binding edge.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating one embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of a leaf of my improved book, showing the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a leaf provided with T-slot-s 11, by means of which it can be threaded on tapes or other means for holding it in a binder-frame. The invention is not in any respect limited to ledger-leaves or to leaves provided with binding slots or perforations of any particular character, and it will be understood that in these respects the drawings simply illustrate one kind 'of leaf in which the invention may be embodied. The binding edge of the leaf is reduced in thickness at- 12, preferably by compressing or flattening it in any suitable manner, and this reduction of the thickness of the leaf preferably extends from its bound edge up to the bindingopenings. I may reduce the thickness of the leaf by removing a portion thereof on one or both sides of the leaf; but to avoid weakening the leaf in any way and, in fact, to strengthen it I prefer to eifect this reduction by compressing the binding edge of the leaf. This may be ccomplished 1n a variety of waysbetween rollers or beany particular method or means for reaching this result. I also prefer to score the leaf at 13 adjacent to the binding edge and partly on one side and partly on the other, so that the leaf will readily bend in either direction. \Vhile I prefer to render the leaf flexible by scoring, it is apparent that this can be effected in other ways without departing from my invention. For some purposes the reduction in the thickness of the leaf may be carried to a greater or less extent across the leaf; but for ordinary purposes I consider it sufiicient to carry it up to or midway of the bindingpenings.
A loose-leaf book made up of leaves having their bound edges reduced in thickness, as herein described, will have a stub end which will readily compress when the book is opened, so that the stub end may spring up like a spring-back book without separating at the points of binding and permit the leaves to open and lie flat. 'hen the reduction is effected by compression, the leaf will then be made denser and stronger, which prevents-it from tearing or pulling off the binding devices easily and greatly promotes its utility.
\Vithout limiting myself to the exact construction heretofore described, and illustrated in the drawings, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
l. A book composed of a plurality of leaves bound together near one edge, said leaves being of less thickness behind the bindingmeans than in front thereof.
2. A book composed of a plurality of leaves bound together near one edge, said leaves being reduced by compression to less thickness behind the binding means than in front thereof. Y
3. A book composed of aplurality of leaves each provided with openings near one edge to receive the binding means and reduced in thickness back of said openings.
4. A book composed of a plurality of leaves thickness back of said openings and rendered having theirdbinclling eiljges reduced in tl(1llCl fiexiblefin front thereof. ness and ren ere fiexi c in front of sai rer duccd portion FREDERILlx GRIMME.
5. A book composed of a plurality of leaves each provided with openings near one edge to receive the binding means and reduced in \Vitnesses:
