Be it known that I, ORA C. CARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Graduates, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in graduates; and its object is to provide a device of this character which is in the form of a standard upon which bottles are adapted to be placed and the amount of the contents thereof accurately indicated.

The device is especially adapted for use by doctors, druggists, dentists, and other persons in compounding medicine.

The invention consists in providing a base having standards extending from the sides thereof, one standardbeing preferably graduated to indicate ounces and drams, while the other standard is preferably graduated in accordance with the metric system.

The invention also consists in the novel construction and combination of parts,which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the graduate and showing in dotted lines a bottle in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the graduate. Fig. 3 is a transverse section therethrough.

Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a base, preferably stamped from sheet metal and having supporting-flanges 2 at the sides thereof. The end portion of these flanges are preferably bent upward to form ears 3, which are arranged at the ends of the base. Slots 4 are formed within the sides of the base and in the flanges 2, extending therefrom, and projecting through these slots and under the base is a strap 5, the ends of which are bent upward in parallel planes to form standards 6 and 7. One of these standards, 6, is preferably divided into two columns, one of which contains graduations to indicate ounces, while the other is graduated to indicate drams. The outer face of the standard 7 is preferably subdivided, so as to indicate the units of the metric system.

Graduates such as herein described are adapted to be manufactured in different sizes, so as to be used in connection with standard bottles of different sizes. For instance, one size of graduate will be used in an ounce-bottle'of standard shape, while another size will be used with a two-ounce bottle. In using the graduate the bottle is placed upon the base 1 and between the standards 6 and 7 and the ears 3. These ears and standards will hold it firmly in position on the base. The proper liquids can then be poured into the bottle, and the quantities thereof will be accurately indicated by the graduations on the standards.

It will be seen that the device is extremely simple, durable, and inexpensive in construction and obviates the necessity of employing the ordinary glass graduate in which the medicines must be compounded prior to being placed within the bottle. By providing a graduate such as herein described liquid is never brought into contact therewith, and therefore it is not necessary to clean the same after every compounding operation.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base; of a strap extending thereunder and having parallel graduated standards integral therewith and projecting from the base.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a base having slots at the sides thereof, a strap extending through the slots, and parallel standards integral with the strap and extending from the base, said standards having graduations thereon.
