TQ ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, W. M. KOHL, of. Cincinnati, in the county, of Hamilton, and State. of Ohio, have invented a 'new and improved Stereoscope; and I do hereby. declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
' This invention relates to a new and improved stereseope or stereoscopic box; and it consists, first, in a new and improved application of the lenses to the box, whereby the former may be adjusted in two difierent directions, in order to obtain a proper focal distance,-and to suitthe width of the pictures. The invention consists,
second, in an improvement pertaining to the scene or picture-holder, as hereinafterfullyshown and described. In the accompanying sheet of'drawings- Figure 1' is aside sectional view of my invention. Figure 2, a vertical section ofithe same, taken in the line :v :v, fig. 1. IEigureB, a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line y y, fig. 2. to serve as a reflecting surface. On the top of the box, underneath the lids, there is fitted a cover, C, of ground glass, which serves to distribute and mellow the light thrown upon the pictures. These parts are oldand well known, and therefore do not require a' specific description. l
The picture-holder is "constriicted as follows Horizontally through the lower part of the box A there passes a shaft, 1), having a knob, 6, on each end for 'the convenience of turning it, and to the inner surfaces of two opposite sides ,of thebox there are secured vertical cleats 0, between which there are'fitted slides 01. Between these slides there is placed a horizontalshaft, E, which is of rectangularform in itst ransverse section; Over this shaft E there is fitted an apron, F, constructed of any suitable flexible material, and having its ends connected by cords e to the shaft-D,-so that, by turning the shaft D first in one direction andthen in the other, the apron F may be moved over shaft E in a corresponding manner, the movement of the shaft D, and consequently the apron, being limited in either direction by means of cords f attached to shaft D and the sides of the box, as shown in fig. 1. To the apronFthere is attached in any suitable manner a series of bars, g, and to each bar'g, near each end, there is attached a s pringclamp, G. These clamps are composed each of two springs h h, secured to opposite sides of the bars, and-curved, so as to press against the picture-cards H, which are inserted between them, the upper ends of the springs beingjciirved or bent insemicircular form, so that they will, when pressed together, interlock and form a clasp, as shown in fig. 5, and thereby firmly retain or hold the plcturc-cards. By-this arrangement the picture-cardsmay be fitted to and removed from the picture-holder with the greatest 'facility, and, wh en secured by them, firmly retained in position. ,To the ends or two opposite sides of the Box A, there are attached hinged flaps I I,-in which the-tubes J J containing the lenses are fitted.
These tubes are allowed to slide freely in sockets K,and the inner ends of the-tubes have rectangular plates,
or flanges L attached,the opposite edges of which-are bent or curved to form tubes '5, which are fitted loosely on rods j, so that they may slide freely thereon. The rodsj of each fiapI may be formed out of one piece, bent or curved, so as to have two parallel parts on which the flanges L slide, the bent or curved portion being so curved as to form an eye or nut, is, through which a screw, M, passes, said screw extending through the flap, and having a knob, N, on'its outer end for the convenience of turning it. The ends of the rods jj passloosely through a frame, 0, hereinafter described, 00 represent two lever-frames, which are pivoted at one end to the flap I, the frame 0 having oblong slots Z made in it for the pivots m to pass through, (see fig. 3,) which slots admit of a requisitedegree ofplay of the frame 0. The other frame, 0', has its pivots passing through it without oblong slots, no play of said frame being. required.
By this arrangement it will be seen that the lens tubes JJ may, by turning the screw M, be adjusted further forward or backward, and a proper focal distance obtained; The sockets K K in each flap are provided with nuts'n, which are fitted on'a right-ancl-left screw-rod, P, having a knob, 0, on one end, for the convenience of turning it. By means of this screw-rod, connected with the sockets K, throug'h the medium of the nuts 1:, it will be seen that the lenses may be adjusted nearer together or further apart, as may be desired, and said lenses consequently adjusted to suit the size or width of the pictures, so as to insure perfect binocular vision in relation with the pictures.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I v 1.,The combination of the bent rod j, screw m, and pivoted levers O O, with the plate L and Iense-tubes J,'all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described for the purpose set forth. 2. Incombination withthe above, I claim the right and lefthand screw P, having head, 0, and passing through lugs 'n attached to sockets K K, as described for the purpose specified.
