SUPERHEATER FOR GAS-PRODUCERS.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 764,437, dated July 5, 1904.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED BARKER DUFF, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Pittsburg, Allegheny county, State of Pennsylvania, (whose postal address is 5310 Dahlia street, Pittsburg, Allegheny county, State of Pennsylvania,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Connected with Superheating Apparatus for Gas-Producers, (for which application for British Patent No. 16,243, dated July 23, 1903', has been made,) of which the following is a specification.
My said invention has for its object to provide an improved superheating apparatus for gas producers which shall be simpler, stronger, cheaper, and more eflicient than those hitherto in use, while the parts are arranged so that they are more accessible for we amination or repair.
In order that the said invention may be fully understood, I hereunto append two sheets of explanatory drawings, to be hereinafter re ferred to in describing the improvements.
Figure 1 on Sheet 1 of the drawings is a sectional side elevation, and Fig. 2, Sheet 2, a sectional plan, of the improved apparatus shown as applied to a gas-producer.
In the drawings the same reference-letters are used to mark the same or like parts wherever they are repeated.
According to the invention there is provided a vertical shell or casing A of circular form, which is fitted with upper and lower tubeplates A A and also with a transverse baffleplate A, extending up from the lower tubeplate to within a short distance of the upper tube-plate. On each side of the baffle-plate A there is fixed between the tube-plates A A two tubes B B and C C the upper ends of which open into an upper space or box A, formed above the upper tube-plate A, the lower ends of each pair of tubes opening, respectively, into inlet and outlet bottom spaces B C", arranged below the bottom tube-plate A and formed by a cross-partition plate A.
The inlet-space B is connected to a brick-linedv chamber D, connected to the gas-discharge outlet E of the producer E, the said chamber being fitted with a stop-valve D, operated by a wheel and spindle D D. Similarly the out let-space C" is connected toan outlet-chamber Gr, fitted with a stop-valve Ur and connected to a hydraulic lute-washer or main H, fitted with a gas-discharge pipe H. The valve-outlet G opens into a downwardly -extending casing part 5?", which dips into the water H in the washer. The lower ends of the inlet valved chamber D and the bottom spaces B C are provided with conically-shapcd dust-cob lecting boxes I) B C fitted with handled plugs or stoppers D B C, while air inlet and outlet connections J J are fitted to the circular shell A at a point a little above the lower tube-plate A the outlet J being connected to the blower casing or grate part of the producer E. A manhole-door A is fitted to the top of the circular casing A, opposite each vertical tube, and similar doors A A are provided on the side of the casing, so that entrance can thus be conveniently obtained for examination or repair of the parts, ample room being left between the parts, so as to allow a workman to get about with facility and perform the necessary examination or repair.
The action of the apparatus is as follows: The inlet and outlet gas-valves D I) being opened, gas formed in the producer E passes out by the upper outlet E into the inlet valved chamber 1) and flows into the inlet-bottom space B From this space it liows upward through the first pair of tubes B B into the upper space or box A. The gas then flows down through the second pair of tubes 0 (J into the outlet-bottom space from which it is discharged through the valved outlet G the gas passing under the edges G" of the depending casing G and then bubbling up through the water H into the flue-space H", from whence it passes out through the discharge-pipe H. While the hot gas is thus passing through the vertical up-comer and surface of the tubes, so that it becomes superheated before entering the blower casing or grate, wlnle the gas becomes partly cooled. The baflie-plate or air-deflecting piece A causes the entering air to take a regular upward and downward course among the tubes C C and B 13 before passing to the outlet J so that it comes thoroughly in contact with the tube-surfaces, and thereby gets effectively heated before passing to the blower casing or grate.
The improved apparatus as hereinbefore described possesses considerable advantages over those hitherto in use. For example, the plan of having simply a single set of up-comer and down-corner gas-tubes B B and C (J is an important advance on previous arrangements, as by this means the hot gas is thus made to take only one upward and downward sweep through the tubes on its way to the outlet,while,owing to the increased area of the tube-passage, the gas travels at a much slower rate, which gives better conditions fortransference of heat and for the collection of dust from the gas. Besides, as there is a separate dust-box for each of the up-comer and downcomer tubes, there is no danger of the dust being swept up out of the box into a tube, as is possible under present existing arrangements where a dust-box is made common to both an up-comer and down-comer tube. The shape and construction of the apparatus also increases its strength and durability and prevents buckling or collapsing of the parts, which is so liable to happen with superheating apparatus as hitherto constructed, while the ease with which it can be examined and repaired lessens labor and altogether combines to make the apparatus much more serviceable for the purpose required.
I claim as my invention 1. Improved superheating apparatus for use in connection with gas-producers, comprising, in combination, a circular casing, or shell, a manhole-door therefor, upper and lower tubeplates therein,an upper box part arranged above the top tube-plate, and a manhole-door in said boX, a set of up-comer and of down-comer gas-tubes fitted between the tube-plates, the area of the tubes and the space between them and the casingbeing sufiicientto admit of cleaning and repairs without dismantling, a bafiie or air-deflecting plate fitted between the respective sets of tubes, separated inlet and outlet bottom spaces arranged within the shell below the bottom tube-plate and connected respectively to the up-comer and the down-comer sets of tubes, a dust-box for each tube fitted to the bottom spaces, an inlet valved chamber, with dust-box attached, connected to the inletbottom space and to the main gas-outlet of the producer, and an outlet valved chamber, an inlet and an outlet for air, or air and steam, for combustion in the producer.
2. In superheating apparatus for use in connection with gas-producers, a circular casing or shell, upper and lower tube-plates therein, extending entirely across said shell, an upper boX part arranged above the top tube-plate, a set of up-comer and of down-comer gas-tubes fitted between the tube-plates and communicating with each other only through the upper boX part, an inlet from the producer to the up-comer tubes, said up-comer tubes being of much greater cross-section than said inlet, a separate dust-box arranged on the casing for each tube, and means for causing the air, or air and steam, for combustion to come in contact with the outer surfaces of the tubes.
3. Superheating apparatus for use in connection with gas-producers, comprising, in combination, acircular shell, upper and lower tube-plates therei'0r,extendin g entirely across said casing, two up-comer tubes and two downcorner tubes, the lower ends of each pair ending in a dust-collecting box, sufficient room beingleft through and around each gas uptake and downtake tubes within the outer shell to admit of a workman for repairs or cleaning, a manhole in the side and in the top of said shell.
