RAILWAY-BED CONSTRUCTION.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 762,208, dated June '7, 1904.

To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, ROBERT E. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mexico, Audrain county, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Bed Construction, of which the following is a speciiication containing a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to railway -beds, my object being to reduce the amount of work required for ties inV railway-bed construction, to give the bed increased strength and durability, and to provide for adjustment when the bed sinks or otherwise changes its position.
My improved railway-bed construction comprises the combination, with a suitable grade, of two parallel rows of ties laid end to end and overlapping, pins inserted vertically through the overlapping ends of the ties, anchors embedded in the grade below and between the rails, tie-rods connecting the rails, elastic anchor-rods connecting the ends of the tie-rods inside of the rails to the anchors, there being turnbuckles incorporated into said anchor-rods for adjusting the lengths of the anchor-rods, anchor-plates embedded in the grade outside of the rails, turnbuckles connecting said anchor-plates to the ties, and rows of cement embedded in the grade between the earth and the ties.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a cross-section of a railway-bed construction embodying the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan, parts being shown in dotted lines and parts being broken away. Fig, 3 is a perspective of one of the tie-rods. Fig. 4 is a perspective showing a connection between two ties.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the wooden ties 5 are half-lapped at their meeting ends and connected together by pins 6, inserted vertically. rI`he rails 7 are laid longitudinally of the ties, said rails being connected by the tie-rods 8. The ties are laid upon rows of cement 9, said rows of cement being embedded intoy the earthen grade 10. The anchors l1 are embedded into the blocks of cement 12, said blocks of cement being cast into position in the grade below and between the rails. The anchor-rods 13 extend upwardly and outwardly from the anchors 11, the central portions 14 of said anchor-rods being coiled or crimped to render said anchorrods elastic under an endwise strain. The nipples 15 are forged integrally with the tierods 8, and turnbuckles 16 connect the nipples 15 to the upper ends of the anchor-rods 13, so that when the grade settles or the ties shift upon the grade the tension upon the anchor-rods may be adjusted by the turnbuckles or compensated by the elastic portions 111. Blocks 17, of cement, are cast integral with the rows 9, said blocks being outside of the ties, and the anchor-plates 18 are embedded in said blocks 17. The anchor fastenings 19 are bolted to the ties, and turnbucliles 2O connect these fastenings to the anchor-plates 18, thus forming an adjustable connection between each block 17 and the corresponding tie.
My railway-bed construction will effectually prevent the ties and rails from moving laterally upon the grade and will effect a great saving in ties.
I claim- 1. 'A railway-bed construction comprising the combination with a suitable grade of two parallel rows of ties half-lapped at their meeting ends, pins inserted vertically through the half-lapped ends, anchors embedded in the grade below and between the rails, tie-rods connecting the rails, elastic anchor-rods connecting the ends of the tie-rods to the anchors,and anchor-plates embedded in the grade and connected to the ties outside of the rails.
2. A railway-bed construction comprising the combination with a suitable grade, of two parallel rows of cement embedded in the grade, ties laid end to end upon the rows of cement, anchors embedded in the grade below and between the rails, and elastic anchor-rods connecting the anchors to the rails.

A railway-bed construction comprising the combination with a suitable grade, ties upon the grade,anchors embedded in the grade below and between the ties, rails upon the ties, anchor-rods extending upwardly from the anchors, tie-rods connecting the rails and turn- TOO buikles connecting the anchor-rods to the tiero s.
4. lIn a railway-bed construction, a suitable grade, ties laid end to end upon the grade and half-lapped, rails mounted upon the ties, anchors embedded in the grade between the rails, anchors embedded in the grade outside of the rails and turnbuckles adjustably connecting said anchors to the rails.
5. In a railway-bed construction, the combination with a suitable grade, of two rows of cement embedded in the grade, two rows of ties laid end to end upon the rows of cement and half-lapped, pins inserted vertically in the half-lapped ends of the ties, anchors embedded in the grade below and between the rails, tie-rods connecting the rails, elastic anchorrods extending upwardly from the anchors, turnbuckles connecting` the anchor-rods to the tie-rods, anclior-plates embedded in the grade outside of the rails and turnbuckles connecting the anchor-plates to the ties.
6. In a railway-bed construction, a suitable grade, ties laid end to end upon the grade, rails upon the ties, tie-rods connecting the rails, anchors embedded in the grade, and elastic anchor-rods extending upwardly from the anchors and connected to the rails, substantially as specified.

10. In a railway-bed construction, asuitable grade, ties upon the grade, rails upon the ties, anchors embedded in the grade, and adjustable connections between the anchors and the ties, substantially as specified.
