BUTTON-FASTENING- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,960, dated June 7, 1904.

Be it known that I, J AMES ERNEST B. Hicks, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Garment with Improved Button-Fastening, of which the following is a specification.

My invention contemplates a garment in which the buttons are attached in a novel and highly eiiicient manner.

Broadly considered, my invention contenr' plates a garment in which the buttons are first wired on and in which the wiring is then concealed by the usual stitching.

More specifically considered, my invention contemplates a garment in which the buttons are first secured in place by metal staples and these staples then covered or concealed by the usual stitching.

My invention is more particularly applicable to the attachment of buttons to the waistbands of trousers.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective ofa pair oftrousers having the buttons attached in accordance with the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a face view of a button and a portion of the cloth of a garment, the button being secured in place by a staple and being ready to receive the stitching. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the staple covered or concealed by stitching. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line 4 4 in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective of one of the staples, the ends thereof being shown clenched, in dotted lines.

It is obvious and will be readily understood that my improved fastener is applicable to any garment or article of clothing or to any arrangement whereon buttons are employed. In other words, my invention'contemplates a novel button-fastening adapted for use wherever it may be desirable to fasten a button to fabric or a flexible material.

As illustrated, my invention is employed in connection with trousers. In such casethe buttons A are located on the waistband in the usual and well known manner. The said buttons can be of any suitable known or approved shape or pattern. As illustrated, each button A is provided with four openings 0. These openings are adapted to receive the ends of the staple B, the staple being preferably inserted first through the button-openings and thence through the cloth of the waistband C. When thus inserted, the staple points or ends can be bent over and clenched in any suitable and desired manner. The staples are preferably of a size and character to, when properly applied, practically render it impossible to pull off the buttons. When thus correctly located on the garment and secured in place, the staples are then covered or concealed and the button given the usual appearance by means of the'stitching D. The stitching of course assists the staple in holding the button in place; but the staple is really entirely sufiicient for this purpose and the stitching is applied more for the purpose of covering up place. When thus attached, the buttons present a neat and satisfactory appearance, and,

in addition, they are so. securely held in place that there is at least no reasonable liability of their being detached or pulled off. It is obvious that the staple can be applied in any suitable or desired manner, either manually or by machinery. .This method of attaching the buttons also tends to. insure their correct location on the garment, inasmuch as they can be first correctly located and fastened on by the staples. After this the garment can be passed on and the stitching applied by another workman.

I claim as my invention- 1. An article of wearing-apparel provided with a button, said button being attached by means of a clenched staple, and the said staple beingcovered or concealed by stitching.

2. An article of wearing-apparel provided with a button, said button being attached by means ofa metallic fastening device, and the said fastening device being covered or concealed by stitching.
