LATCH FOR TRAMWAY-BUCK E TS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,609, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed January 23, 1904. Serial No. 190,366- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON G. RIBLET, a citizen of the United States, residing in Spokane, in the county of' Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Latches for Tramway-Buckets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this .specification.
My invention relates hold. the buckets in an undumped position while they are being suspended or moved along the tramway.
The invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a front elevation of a tramwaybucket provided with my improved latches. Fig. II is a sideelevation of the bucket seen in Fig. I. Fig. III is an enlarged section taken approximately on line III III, Fig. .11.
Fig. IV is anenlarged section taken approximately on line IV IV Fig. III. Fig. V is a perspective view of one of the latches as contemplated by my invention. Fig. VI is a perspective view of oneof the fingers carried by the tramway-bucket and which is engaged by the latch. Fig. VII is a sideelevation illustrating'the position of the latch when struck by the finger during the return of the bucket into an undumped position. Fig. VIII is an elevation, partly in section, and showing a pending arms 2. Secured by bolts or rivets to the upper edges of the sides of the bucket 1 are plates 8, which are provided with. up- Wardly and forwardly projecting fingers 9,
to latches for tram-- way-buckets, which latches when engaged which fingers occupy positions just in front of the dependingarms 2 when the bucket is in an undumped position. Adapted to engage over the upper end of each finger 9 is a U-shaped loop or keeper 10, the ends of which are pivotally held by a bolt 12, that passes through each depending arm 2 and corresponding end 6 of the brace 7. Integral with the outer member of each loop or keeper 10 is an upwardly and forwardly projecting handle 13, that passes through a U-shaped loop or keeper 14, that is rigidly held to the depending arm 2 and its corresponding end 6 by means of a bolt or rivet 14:.
When the bucket is in an undumped position or as that seen in Figs. I and II, the loops 10 are engaged over the upperends of the fingers 9, and thus very securely hold the bucket in, this position. When it is desired to dumpthe bucket, the handles 13 are manually engaged and pushed rearwardly until they engage against the depending ends 2 of the frame, as seen by dotted lines in Fig. II, and this movement disengages the latches 10 from the ends of the fingers 9, and the bucket.
is now free to swing downwardly into the position shown by dottedlines, Fig. II. After the bucket has been dumped and it is swung upwardly, so that the loops may engage the fingers 9, as described, theYflat top faces 9 strike against the under sides of the outer ends of the loops 10 and swing said loops upwardly,
as seen in Fig. VII, and when said fingers 9 pass into said loops 10 the latter drop over and engage said fingers in a locked position. If desired, the outer lower ends of the loops 10 may be beveled, as indicated by 10, Fig.
VIII, in order to bring about the locking of the loops over the fingers. In Fig. IX, I have illustrated a hook which may be-utilized in place of loops 10.
My improved latch is very simple in construction and operation, very securely holds the bucket in an undumped position, and as there are two of said latches the. bucket will still be held undumped, even though one of said latches be accidentally swung open.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with a tramway-bucket and its hanger, of fingers carried by and proj ecting upwardly from the sides of said bucket, engaglng members carried by said hanger for engaging said fingers, and handles integral With said engaging members and projecting upwardly therefrom, and keepers carried by said hanger and confining said handles, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a tramway-bucket and its hanger, of fingers fixed t0 and project- 10 ing upwardly from the sides of the bucket,
engaging members hinged to the hanger for engaging said fingers, operating-handles integral With said engaging members, and loops fixed t0 the hanger through which the ends of the operating-handles pass, substantially as 5 specified.
' BYRON C. RIBLET. In presence of A. H. W HEATLEY, GEO. BRINKERHOFF.
