To ALL WHoM rr MAX'CONGERN:
. Be it known that I., JAMES Vt. BARNUM, of the city New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invonteda certain new, useful, and improved device for fastening the ends of wire rope together when the same is used for banding cotton or other bales; and I do' hereby declare the following to be a full,l
clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexeddrawings making a part of this specification, in which* y Figure 1 is a sectional view, the biscction being in the line of the direction of the hand.
Figure'Q a plan or top view, and
Figure 3 a side view of my device.
As* to all or very nearly all existing devices for fastening togctherthe ends of wire-rope bands, there is this defect or objection, to wit, that the slack oi' the band cannot be taken up at the time the band is applied to the bale, beyond what may be drawn up by hand, and hence there is a very considerable expansion of the bale after it is withdrawn from the compressingniachine, and which being unequal in diiferent parts of the bale,
destroys everything like symmetry of proportions, and interferes to a very annoying extent withthe proper' stowage-of the cotton on boats on which it is placed for transportation, in warehouses, or other places, in which it maybe placed for preservation or convenience. i
My invention is so constructed as that all the slack inay be taken up,- and the saine or very nearly the saine degree of tension be put upon every band on a bale7 so that when it is used, there will be no appreciable expansion or distortion of thebale.
My device consists'y of a cylinder, through which there is a central opening, tipped or provided at. both its ends with a projecting flanch, to prevent the wire rope from slipping off the cylinder around which it is wound, in taking up the'slack, and securing the fastening, and which is suflicicntly -extended atene point of its circumference to allow of the making of an aperture to receive a bolt or key, to secure the slack that has been previously taken up, and `'thus to fix or establish the fastening permanently,
But my invention will be better and more quickly understood by referring to the draw-ings, upon which A marks the cylinder, B the central opening through'it, and C C the projecting ilanchcs at itsends. D marks thc'extcnsion of the iianchcs C C', to which If have referred, and E E the apertures through such extended parts. F is the bolt or key, which is introduced into the apertures E, after the slack has been taken up, to ixv the fastening.
The operation of applying the device to use is very simple, and is as follows, to wit: The band is made to encircle the bale, and the ends of it are passed in reverse directions through the opening, B. The device is then turned or. revolved in either direction, which will, ofcourse, wind up the wire repo in opposite directions, until all the slack is taken up, or the band is drawn tight, and then the bolt or key F, which may be linked to the device to prevent its being lost, is passed through the holes E, in the manner as shown at figs. 1 and 2. This` completes the operation.. When the b'alc is to be broken up, the key Fkmay be either withdrawn or broken, and this being done, a disconnection instantly follows, without injury to the band or the device. l
Thus it will be seen that my device net only secures the slack being taken up, but that it also preserves, uniinpaired, the band-'end itself for renewed and'repeat-cd use.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as a new' article of manufacture, is-
'lhe cylinder A, when provided with the aperture B, the lanches C', in which are holes E E', for the reception ofthe bolt or key F, the whole being constructed and operating as described for the purpose set forth.'
A. Blinnliniu, Burns It. RHODES.
