SPECFICATION'formng part of Letters Patent N o. 761,324, dated May 31, 1904.
` Application ined october so, 1903.
To (1l/ZZ whom, it may con/cern) Be itlknown that I, WILLIAM L. SCIIELLEN BACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have inventedcertain new and useful Improtements in Speed Changing Mechanism, of which. the following is a specication.
My invention relatesto speed-'changing mechanism, and I havershown it in connection with an engine-lathe as appliedfor varying the speed of the lead-screw.
My invention will be Vreadily understood from the following description and claims and from thedrawings, in which latter-- Figure l is a front elevation of the head end of a lathe with my improveddevice applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an endelevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of my improved device, ,taken on the line m m of Fig. 4. Fig. Ltis a cross-section of the same,
taken on` the line 1/3/ of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the housing and shiftingarm of the'secondary speed-variator. Fig. `6
is a plan view of the shifting-stem and shield for the latter, and Fig. 7 shows the of the index laid out in plane.
In the present exempliication of my invention, A represents the bed Vor frame, which may be mounted on suitable legs; B,the headstock; C, the spindle, and D the lead-screwof an engine-lathe, which may b e of any suitable cone of gears being secured for rotating together. This cone of gears is splined to the Shaft G, and in the form shown the hub nextends from the smallest gear of the cone, the other gears of the conebeing mounted on said hub, said gears meshing with the mating periphery serial No. 179.138. (No model.)
gears of a group, nest, or'cone of gears O,` diversely sized, on a shaft P. The gearsof cone O rotate loosely on the shaft P, except when separately clutched to the shaft. The arm M supports a stem m', which has a peripheral index m2 at its outer end arranged in columns of resultants side by side, the nume. 5 5 ber of columns corresponding to the number of mating gears in the cones N O; -This peripheral index may be in the form of a plate surrounding the periphery of the stem and secured to the stem. The gears N O may be designated' 60 the supplemental or secondary groups, nests, or cones of gears. I-have shown four gears in these mating cones, and the peripheral index correspondingly also contains four columns of resu'ltants. All save-one of these 65 columns are concealed by the shield m3, which has an-opening mffor exposing one of the columns in the index. The innerA end ofthis shield forms a plug m5, adapted tobe received by sockets m, shown along the slot m7. shield also has extensions m8, adapted to it the slot to prevent .rotation of the shield. The shield is :spring-seated by means of a spring m.
A pinion g is secured to the inner end of the stem m. '.The. pinion meshes with annular teethv q on a bushing Q, which is journaled on a sleeve q2, surrounding the shaft Cr. Thel teeth g' meshwith a pinion g3, supported on a stud Z2 on the housing L. The pinion g3 8O meshes with annular teeth p on shaft P. The shaft Pis arranged to slide in bearings :Z3 Z4 of` the housing and has a slot p', in which are seated opposite keys p2, spring-pressed by a spring Ao3 into the opposite socketso of the 85 cone of gears O for l clutching the respective gears of the cone O to the shaft P. The ends of the keys are shown half-moon shaped, the
y sockets being correspondingly shaped, so that the stem m', which carries the index, lateral 95v movement is imparted to the shaft P, causing The 7o any of the gears of the cone O to be clutched to the shaft P through the keys p2, causing selective speed to be imparted to the shaft P through any one of the respective mating gears of the cones N and O, thus indicating the proper ratio of the gears on the exposed portion of the index.
Shaft P is splined to receive gear R, which meshes with a transmitter-gear S mounted on shaft s, journaled in bearings Z in the housing. Transmitter-gear S therefore has four different speeds, or a speed for everycolumn of resultants or threads shown in the index. Transmitter-gear S is adapted to mesh with the respective gears of a group, nest, or cone of gears T, diversely-sized, shown as keyed to the lead-screw D within a casing U, secured to the lathe-bed. The gears T may be designated the Lmain or primary 7 group, nest, or cone of diversely-sized gears.
The housing L is provided at its lower end with the segment of a gear Z6, which segment meshes with a segment e, secured to shaft V, journaled in bearings c c'. The shaft V carries a crank c', which has a detent-pin 'U2 engaging holes u on the are a' of casing U, the detent-pin being spring-pressed into engagement with the holes by spring e3. ,The holes are so arranged about the are u as to make the transmitter-gear S properlyrnesh with the gears of the cone T.
Secured to the housing L is alatch Z7, which is made to fit into grooves v4 in the segment c, which grooves are spaced to correspond in lateral distance with the respective gears of the cone of gears T. In the form shown the segment 'v is of substantially thewidth of the cone of gears T for having the segment ZG mesh therewith irrespective of the lateral position of the housing L. The latch Z7 is shaped to t the said grooves c* in the periphery of the segment c and is so secured to the housing L that when the housing is thrown back sufficiently to disengage transmitter-gear S from the largest gear of the cone of gears T gages the latch from the grooves in the segment c and permits lateral movement of the housing. As latch Z7 can be engaged onlyat intervals corresponding with the grooves c4, the latter also corresponding with the lateral position of the respective gears of the cone'T, transmitter-gear S must always be given the correct lateral position before it can be meshed with any of the gears of the cone T.
When the latch Z7 is disengaged from the groove Z4, the housing is permitted to be slid sidewise through the medium of stem m and shield m3, which are grasped bodily for manually shifting the housing laterally, the housing carrying with it the mating cones of gears N and O with the means for causing selective operative connection between said cones and the shaft P and the transmitter-gear S, thus carrying with it what may be termed the speed-variator 7 for the main cone of gears and constituting a selfcontained slidable speed-box. Moving the housing thus laterally places the transmitter-gear S in lateral positionfor causing it to be selectively meshed with any one of the gears of the main cone of gears T, transmitting a speed to each of said gears dependent on the speed transmitted to the transmitting-gear through the medium of said secondary speed-variator, which in the example shown embraces four diiierent speeds. Each of these four different speeds is adapted to cut a given series of threads, and each of these series is shown in a separate column of resultants on the index. The gear of the main cone employed to cut each thread in a given column is indicated by a number to correspond with each gear in a column adjacent to the column of resultant threads, the gears of the main cone being instanced as eleven in number. The resultants in each column may properly be termed primary resultants, being the resultants obtained through the primary speed-variator, and the columns themselves may properly be termed secondary columns, being the columns of resultants obtained through the secondary speed-variator. The sockets o are numbered to correspond withthe numbers in said adjacent column of the index, and as these sockets are spaced to correspond with the gears of the main cone it will readily be seen that transmitter-gear S may be adjusted laterally to engage with any one of the gears of the main cone and have its correct numbered socket shown by the column on the index exposed by the opening in the shield m, which shield fits into the proper numbered socket n so shown for producing the numberof threads indicated in the index.
Instancing the operation it may be assumed that three threads per inch are to be cut. The knurl of stem m is turned until the colmnn of the index containing three threads is exposed through the opening in the shield fm, thereby simultaneously shifting the keys 71" for proper setting of the supplemental speedvariator. Opposite three threads will be found the ligure 7. The crank e' is lifted so as to engage detent-pin ce with hole ax and transverse movement .given the stem m and shield m3 to engage shield '1n/7 into socket numbered 7. Engaging the pin c with proper hole u properly meshes the transmitting-gear S with the proper gear of the main cone T.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
