MOLDING APPARATUS.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,255, dated May 31, 1904.

Beit known that we, GUILFORD D. RowELL and DUDLEY Gr. ROWELL, residing at Appleton, in the county of Outagamie and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Molding Apparatus, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in molding apparatus, and more particularly to improvements in apparatus for molding or forming building or paving blocks or tiles from cement or other plastic material.
The object of this invention is to produce a device or apparatus which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and with which building or paving tiles or b locks of any desired shape or configuration may be molded or formed lat a minimum expense. This and other objects we attain by means of the device constructed as described in the specification and illustrated in the drawings presented herewith, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of an apparatus embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of said apparatus, partially in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of said apparatus with the hopper therefor illustrated in Fig.v 1 removed. Fig. 4. is a face View of one of the connecting-plates utilized in the make up of the apparatus. Fig. 5 is a view in cross-section of a portion of the apparatus; and Figs. 6 and 7 are views in perspective of tiles or blocks, the same being products of said apparatus.
Throughout the several views like elements are denoted by like, characters.
The device or apparatus consists of four standards or legs 8, secured together by means of two horizontally-positioned plates or members 9 and 10, the plate9 being illustrated in detail in Fig. 5 and the plate 10 in Fig. 4. Bolted or otherwise secured to plate 10 is a mold-box 11, which may be of any desired form or shape and will be of the form which it is desired to give t0 the finished tiles or blocks. Threaded through plate 10 are four screws 12, which by means of nuts 13 are locked in adjusted position, and these screws are adapted to serve as a support for a mold or follower board 14., which will snugly fit within the mold-box.
In forming or moldingthe tiles or blocks the mold-board 14. is supported, by means of the screws 12, the desired distance from the top of the mold-box, the distance varying with the thickness of the tile of block. A removable hopper 15 is placed on the mold-box, and the box is lled with cement or other material of which it is desired to form the tile or block. After thoroughly tamping the hopper willbe removed and the top of the block 16 struck off even with the top of the mold-box.
It has been found desirable to provide the blocks with'dowel-holes, so that in laying the same dowel-pins may be used and a regular and perfect alinement of the blocks obtained. In order to place the dowel-holes in the same position in each block, the sides of the moldbox are provided with holes or openings 17, so that when the cement or other material is in a plastic state pins 18 may be inserted into the block through the sides of the box and there allowed to remain until the block is properly tamped and set, after which the pins will be removed.
In order to raise the mold-board or follower out of the mold-box, mechanism to be hereinafter described is utilized, and it has been found that by moving the mold-board up out of the box, and with it carrying the block, the sides of the block contacting with the sides of the mold-box are made smooth and regular.
Each of the plates 9 and 10 at its center is provided with a hole or opening Vwithin which and vertically of the apparatus a supportingrod 19 is movable. The top of the rod carries a Supporting-plate 20, upon which the locked in adjusted position by means-of bolts to provide for adjusting the apparatus to accommodate the manufacture of blocks or tiles of varying thicknesses. Each lever 23 is provided with a removable handle 27, and when the mold-board is in operative position and the rod 19 in its lowermost position the handles 27 will be removed, so as not to be in the way of the persons filling the mold and tamping the block. When the block is ready to be removed from the apparatus, the handles will be depressed and moved to a horizontal position, where they will be locked on account of ythe construction of the shifting fulcrum for the levers formed by the links 24. After the block and mold-board have been moved up out of' the mold-box the mold-board carrying the block will be lifted from the supporting-plate 20'and placed in a position or place wherethe block can set and mature.
` If in the construction of blocks or tiles it is desired to place an interstitial web or fabric, such as wire-netting or metallic bands,.the same may be placed in the mold after aportion of the cement or material forming the block has been placed therein and may be formed into the block `itself and serve as a v binder and strengthener for the block. l
It will be understood that various changes from the construction shown herein may be made in this apparatus without departing from the spirit of our invention*as, for instance,
one of the levers 23 and its handle 27 might be omitted, though handles on two sides of the apparatus are desirable.
What we :claim 'as our invention isl. In a molding apparatus, a mold-box, a supporting-frame, a mold-board fitted and supported adjustable vertically in the box independently of the lifting means, a vertical rod beneath the mold-board movable vertically in the frame and upwardly in the box and adapted to lift the mold-board and its load,and means -for lifting the rod and its load comprising one or more levers hinged to the rod below the box each lever fulcrumed on a link pivoted at one end to thelever medially and hinged on aiixed support.
2. In a molding apparatus, a mold-box, a supporting-frame, a mold-board fitting in the box and liftable therefrom, a vertical rod beneath the mold-board movable vertically in the frame andy in the box and adapted to lift the mold-board and its load, and means for lifting lthe rod and its load comprising one or more levers hinged on the rod and extending laterally therefrom so as to swing up and down, each lever fulcrumed medially on alink at an angle to the lever and hinged on the frame, the parts being so disposed that the lever may swing to a seat downwardly lifting' the moldboard and locking it in its upper position and swinging upwardly carries the link to a leverlocking position.
