PATENT- OFFICE.

HosEsHoE ATTAeHwuaNT.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 760,785, dated May 24, 1904.
Application led October 21, 1902. Serial No. 128,143. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, JOHN GRIFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in4 Horseshoe Attachments, of which the following is a full'and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
The object of this invention is to provide an improved attachment for horseshoes whereby a plate-shoe may be provided with calks whenever desired and whereby a sharp shoe may also be provided with ca lks when the latter are worn off or worn smooth; and .with these and other objects in view the invention consists `in an attachment for horseshoes constructed as hereinafter described and claimed'.
The invention isfully disclosed in the followingv specification, of which the accompanying vdrawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the vlews, and 1n which-y Figure 1 is a top plan view of a horseshoe provided with my improved attachment; Fig.
2, a bottom plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal central section of the attachment removed from a shoe.
In the drawings forming part of this specilication I have shown at a an ordinary horseshoe provided with a toe-calk a2 and heelcalks a3, and in the practice of my invention I provide an attachment which comprises a main block -l), providedwith a yoke-shaped top plate c, having forwardly-directed side or end members c2, which are adapted to be inserted between the toe portion of the shoe The block Z is also provided with a yoke-shaped bottom plate d, having forwardly-directed end I members d2, provided with toe-calks d3, and the forwardlydirected end member (Z2 of the yoke-shaped plate d rests on the bottom ofthe shoe at the opposite sides of the calk a2 when the attachment is in position.
Passing centrally through the block b is a screw e, the front end of whichxis provided with a head yor stationary nut e2, which may block I) the said screw e is also provided with a nut e3, and that portion of the screw which passesthrough the block is not threaded.
Mounted on the screw 'e rearwardly of the nutl e3 is a screw-threaded collar f, having side wings f2, to which are pivoted links or levers g, which are also pivoted at g2 to the free ends of arms 7L, which are pivoted between the plates c and d at h2 adjacent to the opposite sides of the block b.
The free ends of the arms t when the attachment is in position overlap the bottom portions of the sides of the shoe adjacent to the ends thereof, as clearly shown in the drawings, and said arms are provided with fiat fingers h3, which when the shoe is in position overlap the top portion of the shoe, and the Vheel portions of the arms are provided with calks t, which are shown in dotted lines in Fig. l and in full lines in Figs. 2 and 3.
It will be understood that in practice my improved attachment may be applied to a horseshoe while the shoe is on the foot, and
' in doing this the forwardly-directed members c2, of the plate care slippedbetween the forward part of the-shoe and the hoof and the l attachment or-the arms thereof are pressed down between the sides of the shoe. A
wrench is then applied to the nut e3 and the screw e is turned, so as to force the free ends ofthe arms la outwardly, and in this operation saidends of said arms pass beneath the shoe, and the linger-pieces if thereof pass 'between the shoe and the horses foot, and
the attachment is securely locked to the shoe.
`This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
' Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An attachment for horseshoes comprising a T block having yoke-shaped top and bottom plates adapted to fitabove and below the front portion of the shoe, the end portions of the IOO bottom plate being provided with calks, a portion of said arms, substantially as shown screw passed through said block and free to and described.
