Description
DANIEL 'W. BANCROFT, -OF MARSHF-IELD, VERMONT.
.Letters Patent No. 76,037, ma arma s1, 186s'.
` IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
@Ltr fdgmrle reftmru itesetttets tttut mit making @mit rf tige stmt.
T0 ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, DANIEL W, BANROFT, of Marshfield, in the county of Washington, and State ofv Vermont, have invented ya new and useful Improvement iii-,Washing-Maclgines for washing clothes of all descriptions, which I call Athe Green-Mountain Washing-Machineg" and I do hereby declareV that the following is a clear and exact descriptionl of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view', with the end and top removed, showing the internal arrangement.
Figure 2 a side elevation, and l Figure 3 a top view of my machine. v c
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and operation.
A designates the tub, made as shown in the drawings, which may be of any desired size,.and said tub is I supported by legs a a. The bottom, b, of said tub is made slauting from its rear end to about three-quarters of its length, or to the point e, from which point it is curved to its forward end. The curved surface of this bottom is made of zinc or any suitable material. The upper portionof the forward end of the tub is made slanting and corrugated', 'which serves as a washing or rubbing-board, and the lower part of said end 1s made vertical in order to allow room for the beaters to play back and forth. B represents the top or cover, which is made into two parts and hinged together, the object-of which is to preventV the necessity of removing the whole top-piece B when the clothes or articles to be washed are tobe putinto and taken from the tub; but the entire piece may be removed when desired. O'is an adjustable cross-beam, mortised or set into the upper part of the sides ofthe tub 'A near its forward or deepest end. To one side of this beam are hinged the upper ends of the arms' e said-arms being furnished at their lower ends with the beaters 'cl d. The saidarms e are mortise'd in the beaters ol d near their, centre. ff indicatetwo arms, which are also hinged to the side of the 4beaters cl cl. Said arms are so secured at their other ends, to the shaft E, that they will work freely whenl operated. The shaft Eis made of iron, or any suitable material, and is furnished at its outer end with a crank or handle,-G, by means of which it is operated.,- The said shaft E is also formedwith two cranks, as shown in Vthe drawings, t which are attached the ends ofthe arms'ff, by means of metal loops. The object of. saidy arrangement is to communicate an alternate mtion4 to the-beaters dd. g g indicate two curved slots, which are made in thevsides of the tub A, near its rearend,as seen in' tig. 2, in which the shaft E plays back and forth when desired. It h'indicate lsupports loosely lrsecilred to the sides of tub A, directly over the curved slots gg, in' which supports the shaft E has its bearings. m my representtwo spiral springs, one end ofisaidsprings being. secured to the tub, as shown in lig. 2,.and the opposite' ends attached'to the lower endsl of the supports t h. The object of these springsis to press the beaters cl against theelothes', and alsoto allow the'said beaters to adjust themselves to the size or quantity of articles to be washed.. 'n isa hole in the side of the tub, near its bottom, which serves as an exit for the water, and said holelmay be closed by means of a cork -or plug.
It will be observed that the adjustable cross-beam may be removed at pleasure, and the internal arrangement displaced or bent back over the rear side of the tub, and thus allow the said tub to be usedfor washing in the common way' also. -Y v The operation. of my'machine is as follows: The'crank or 'handle G will be grasped-and turned, operating .the shaft E andm its cranks, which will operate the arms ff alternately, `and saidarms will communicate a like motion to the beaters d 0l and its arms .e e, said arms beingallowed tof-work freely by means of its hinges, and at the same time-the spiral springs m m will allow the supports h 71, to move backwards orforwards with the shaft E in the curved slots, in order .to enable the beaters to accommodate themselves tlo the size or quantity of articles to be washed.`
, It will be remarkedthat if any of the'cloth'es should happen not to bewashed perfectly clean they may be rubbed or washed against theeorrugated side of the tub, thus producing the required cleanliness.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
` 1. The swinging supports h h, pro'vided with spiral springs m m, in combination with slots gg and shaft E; substantially for the purpose specified.
2i I clai'tn the adjustable cross-bam B, to which-are hinged the beaters d d, in combination ivth hinged armsff'shaft E, swngingsuppdits h h,s.nd spiral springs m m, all arranged substantially in the manur hrein set forth,
DAN-IELW. BANGROFT.
