JOHN CALVIN LAMBR'I, OF TONICA, ILLINOIS.
l AxLE-oiLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,215, dated. May 17, 1904 Application filed September l5, 1903. Serial No. 173,269. (N mdeld T0 all whom, it mrlfy concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CALVIN LAMBERT,
a citizen of the U nited States, and a resident of rlonica, in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Axle-Oiler, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in Oilers for vehicle-axle skeins, an object being to provide an oiler of simple construction and consisting of few parts and that can be readily removed or replaced with the hub-nut without interfering with the oil in the cup.
I will describe an axle-oiler embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
`igure 1 is @longitudinal section of an axle skein and oiler embodying my invention. Fig. thereof, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates an axle-skein having exterior channels 6 7, which communicate, respectively, -with rorts 8 9, leading outward through the threat ed end 10 of the skein, the said' threaded end receiving `a1hubnut 11, which at its inner side ishprovided with a chamber 12 for receiving a pack-` ing 13. The oil-cup comprises a cylindrical f bodyll, having screw-thread engagement with the nut 11., and having screw-thread engagement with the outer end of the body is a cap or cover 15, provided with a threaded opening to receive a scrcw-shaft 17, on the inner end of which is a piston or plunger 18, and on the outer end is a button or fingerpiece 19. The body 14 and cap 15, as indicated in Fig. 2, are made angular, so that a wrench may be applied thereto for removing the cup and the hub-nut 11 both together. It is to be understood, however, that the cup may be readily removed from the nut 11 without removing the nut from the skein, and when desired said nut 11 may be rigidly held in place or prevented from turning by means of a cross-pin 20.
The oil is to be placed in the cup inward of the plunger 18, and by manipulating this pl unger the oil will be forced throughthe ports 8.
9 and into the channels 6 7 thus lubricating the skein and hub-box. l/Vhile I have illustrated but two channels in the outer surface of the skein, it is obvious that a greater'number may be formed, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent# The combination with an axle-skein having longitudinal ports opening outward at the outer end, of a hub-nut having an exterior thread, an oil-cup engaging with said thread, a removable cap for said cup, a screw-shaft operating in said cap, by said shaft within the cup.
In testimony whereof I have signed ny name to this speciiication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN CALVIN LAMBERT. Witnesses: l
J HRTnNoNnR, W. J. EBNER.
