PATENT OEEIeE.
BRAKE-BEAM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,302, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed November 18, 1903. Serial No. 181,597- (No model.) I
To all whom 2'6 may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM McMILLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brake-Beams, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved brakebeam for railway-cars; and it consists in the certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved brake-beam, the same being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side sectional elevation of the same, the said section taken on the line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the movable section of the central post.
To construct a brake-beam in accordance with my invention, I provide a piece of tubing 1 of a suitable size and length and attach to either end of the same a brake-shoe holder.
2, which together with the shoes 3 are similar in construction to those now in common use. Attached to the center of this tube 1 is a T connection 4, in which is fitted a central section 9, forming a part of the post in which the brake-lever 11 is connected. This central section or member of the post is cylindrical in form, having at either end reduced portions 6, provided with slotted openings 7, through which bolts 7 pass for the purpose of connecting the parts together and at the same time permit the said member to turn a limited distance. This member 9 is also formed with a slot 8, extending in the direction of its length, for the reception of the brake-lever 11, the same being attached in position by a bolt 10. Attached by a bolt 7 to the inner end of the central member 9 is a sleeve 12, having a means 13 for suspending the beam to the body of the car and also to form a bearing for a brace 14. This brace may be either a tube or bar and is passed through an. opening in the sleeve 12 and the ends passed through openings formed in the tube 1 and located on the inside of the brakeshoe holder 2. These ends of the brace 14;
are threaded and project from the extremities of the tube 1 and are fitted with washers 15, nuts 16, and, if desired, with a suitable nutlocking device.
The sleeve 12 is provided with bifurcated arms 13, through which passes a bolt retained by a nut, the bolt receiving the means 13' for suspending the beam to the body of the car, said means also being received between the bifurcated arms of the sleeve 12.
It will be noticed that by this construction and arrangement of the parts a simple, strong, and comparatively light beam is formed and that the brake-lever may adjust itself to any required angle by the movement of the central member 9.
Various slight modifications and changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. Therefore 1 do not wish to confine myself to the exact details shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A brake-beam for railway-cars comprising a tube carrying brake-shoe holders at its ends, a T connection carried by said tube, a central section having its ends reduced in diameter, with one of said ends received in said T connection, a sleeve receiving the other end of said central section, said reduced ends of the central section having slotted openings with bolts secured to and passing through the sleeve and said T connection and extending into said slots to limit the rotation of the said central section, said sleeve having bifurcated arms with the bolt passing through said arms, means for suspending the device received over said last-named bolt and between said arms, said central section being slotted, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofl have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM MOMILLAN.
In presence of FRED. HENZI, M. HUNTER.
