THOMAS KINGAN -DAVISON, OF JAMESTOWN, YORK.
CHECK-PUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 758,425, dated April 26, 1904.
Application filed September 9, 1903. Serial No. 172,497. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS KINGAN DAvI- son, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Check-Punch, of which the following is a full,'clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for puncturing the value-marks for banking-checks, an object being to provide a device for this purpose that will be simple in its construction, having no parts liable to get out of order or break, and that may be conveniently carried in a persons pocket.
I will describe a check-punch embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate'corresponding parts inall the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of acheck-punch embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof. Fig. 3 shows the under side of the upper or puncturing die. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of one of the members thereof, and Fig. 5 shows a portion of the lower or depressed die.
The device comprises a base or lower die 1, having depressed figures or indices 2, and coacting with this lower die is an upper die consisting of spring yielding members 3, radiatingfrom a center L and having pins or puncturing-points 5, conforming to the figure or other indices to be punctured in the check and coacting with the depressed portions 2. Arranged between the upper die and the lower die is a washer 6, which holds the parts suitably spaced apart, and above the upper die is a plate 7. These several parts are secured together by a rivet 8, which is preferably rectangular, as shown, so as to prevent the turning of the parts relatively to each other. On the upper sides of the spring yielding members 3 are indices corresponding to those on the under side. 7 The plate or cap-piece 7 is to prevent more than one of the members 3 from being depressed at one time, as it will be noted the said plate extends nearly to the periphery ofthe upper die member.
In the operation the check to be punctured is to be placed between the die members and against the washer 6, which forms a gagevplate, and then the member 3, carrying the desired figure, is to be pressed downward to puncture the check. 7 The washer 6 not only serves to support the upper and lower die members, but it serves as a guide against which the edge of the check is to be placed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A check-punch comprising a lower die mem ber, an upper die member, consisting of resilient radial arms, a spacing-washer arranged between the die members and forming a guide against which the edge of a check is to be placed, a plate on the upper die member and bearing upon the resilient arms, and means for securing the several members together.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub- 4 scribing witnesses.
THOMAS KINGAN DAVISON.
