Description
PATENTED APR. 26, 1904. F. HUBERTI.
ANTIRATTLING DEVICE FOR WINDOW SASHBS.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 29, 1903. N0 MODEL.
e w A my/' i L I UNITED STATES Patented April 26, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
ANTIRATTLING DEVICE FOR WINDOW-SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPaten NO- 758,075, dated April 26, 1904.
Application filed May 29, 1903. Serial No. 159,233. (No model.)
To all guhom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRITZ HUBERTI, a citizen of the United States, residing in Neehawken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antirattling Devices. for Window-Sashes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved antirattling device for window-sashes which is so arranged at each corner of the meeting-rail of the lower window-sash that it can be inserted at will in position between the front guide-frame and the meeting-rail for pressing the latter against the meeting-rail of the upper windowsash and prevent thereby effectively the rattling of the window in stormy weather and the passage of objectionable air-currents. For this purpose the invention consists of an antirattling device for window-sashes which comprises a base-plate that is attached to the corner of the meeting-rail of the lower sash and an arm hinged to said plate and provided at its outer end with a wed ge-shaped portion and a handle for swinging it into active position or back out of use on the saslrrail, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a front elevation of a lower windowsash with my improved antirattling device shown in position thereon, the device being shown on the left-hand side of the sash in ac tive position for preventing rattling and at the right-hand side in inactive or thrown-back position. Fig. 2. is a plan view of Fig. 1, partly in horizontal section, through the window-casing; and Fig. 3 is avertical transverse section on line 3 3, Fig. 1, showing the meeting-rails of the sashes pressed together by my improved antirattling device, which is placed in active position for use.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings. (1, represents the meeting-rail of the lower sash, and b the meeting-rail of the upper sash. To the meeting-rail a of the lower sash is attached by suitable screws (Z' at each corner of the same a metallic plate (Z, provided with lugs (Z to which is hinged an arm (a, which carries at its outer end a laterally-projecting and Wedge-shaped plate 0', as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3. Near the outer end of the arm 6 is arranged a projection 6 that serves as a handle for operating the antirattling device by placing it from its normal or inactive position of rest (shown at the right-hand side of Fig. 1) into its'active position, so that the wedge-shaped plate 6 is inserted between the front guide-strip f and the meeting-rail a of the lower sash, as shown clearly at theleft-hand side of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3. The antirattling devices are placed in active or locked position between the front guide-strip and the corner of the meeting-rail of the sash for the night or whenever there is stormy weather. The downward pressure of the wedge-shaped plate 0' on the meeting-rail of the lower sash presses the latter firmly against the meeting-rail of the upper sash and prevents thereby the annoying rattling of the sashes and the cold air from passing through the slot between the sashes. When the sash is desired to be opened or when there is no storm, the antirattling devices are swung on the pin e', passing through the lugs (Z of the plate (Z, over into inactive position of rest, so that the lower sashcan be raised or lowered at will.
My improved antirattling device is intended for use on window-sashes that are provided with the ordinary sash-locking devices, which while locking the meeting-rails together, so as to prevent the opening of the window from the outside, do not perform the function of antirattling devices or of securing the sashes together in so tight a manner as to prevent drafts or air-currents from passing through the slot between the same. For this reason it is specially adapted for hospitals, sick-rooms, &c. It can be readily applied to the meetingrail of the lower sash by any one by placing it in position on the meeting-rail with the wedged-shaped plate in position between the front guide-strip and the meeting-rail of the lower sash. The position of the screws can then be readily marked, the sameinserted, and the device fastened in position. It forms a cheap and convenient attachment for not alone preventing the rattling of windows in stormy weather, but by clamping the sashes tightly against the guide-strips and against each other prevents the passage of any objectionable aircurrents or drafts, is always ready for use When required, applicable to any sash, and as itis attached to and forms a part of the lower sash it does not get lost nor detached as the de: tachable antirattling devices heretofore in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An antirattling device for Window-sashes, consisting of akbase-plate, lugs on the same, an arm, pivoted at one end to said lugs and provided With an offset plate made of Wedgeshaped cross-section at the other or free end, and a handle above said Wedge .shaped plate extending upwardly from said plate and outwardly at both sides of the same, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two'subscribing Witnesses.
