nom-N DAILY. OFGANAL TOWNSHIP, PENNSYLYANIA.
Letters Patent No. 75,738, dated March 24, 1868.
IMPROVE) c.Int-construe;`
T() ALL W IIOM'IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ROLAN DAILY, of Canal township, in the county of Venango, State of Pennsylvania,
have invented a. new and improved Self-Acting'Car-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being Yhad to the accompanying drawings, and the letters ot' reference marked thereon. l
Figure 1 is' a side view of my coupling.
A is the shaft of the draw-hcad, by which it is attached tothe car in the usual manner. G, better shown at Figure 5, is an iron frame, through which the draw-head shaft A passes. This frame is bolted on the bottom et' the car. 2 3 4 v5 are spiral springs, which support the clraw-head shaft A, giving it at the same time a freedom of Amotion to accommodate itself to the motion of the cars. D is a lever, which, when raised, may `be kopt inv any desired position by the ratchet W. B is a stationary link 'or arm, bolted on the coupling by.bolts 6 'i'. C is a slot, for a movable coupling-link of the common form, and F a common eouplingpin. These may be used when it is not desired to use the arm B, so that a car with my coupling on may be coupled to a car witha common coupling.-
I Figure 2 is a top view, showing the slot C and portion of' the common coupling-pin F.
Figure S is a view of the under side, showing the internal construction of my coupling.
S is a coupling-pin,- attached to the `vbent lever R. n is a catch, thrown towards the lever It by the spiral spring O. m is a triggerbar, attached to the c atch n by a'joint and pin, e. P is a spiral spring, attached to the end, y, of the lever R. This spring draws the end of the lever y down, and thereby pushes the pin S towards 18, tig. 3, and through the hole 8 in the arm B, thus locking the ca'rs together.4 There are two couplings exactly alike, the arm B of each being locked by the pin S of each. vX is au eccentric-hook, hulngvon a pin, 10. The connectingrod E is attached to this hook at 11, and to the lever D. This hook passes over the end, y, of the lever R, and when the lever D is drawn up, the lever f1/'R is'lpshed out until the end, y, passes by the notch in catch n, when this catch is thrown forward under the end of the lever by the spring O, while the pin S is drawn back, all as shown in fig. 3. V I,
Now, when a car approaches with another coupling like mine, the cud, 8, of the bar B strikes the end of the trigger-bar '07.2, and pushes back the catch n, rcleasingthereby th'e y-end of the lever R, whichis drawn down by the spring l?, forcing the'pin S through the hole 8, thereby securely coupling the cars together. When thc cud of lever D is drawn up, and fastened-by the ratchet W, the end, 12, of the hook X, strikes the trigger bar n1, and prcssesit down, so that the arm B will not hit it, and then the cars will not couple. As soon as the lcvcr D is released, the spring 13, fig. 3, lifts the trigger-bar m up'in a position where the bar B will strike it, :is heforedcscribed. f I.
What I claim as mypinvention, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is as follows:
A car-coupling, composed ofthe pin S, lever R, spring-catches and operating-devices connected therewith, for locking the arm B, all arranged in a drawshcad, combined and operated as described for the purposes set forth. i
ROLAN DAILY.
