M. RUTLEDGE. SEAT FOR WATER GLOSETS.
AYPL'IOATION IILED JAN. 30, 1904. N0 MODEL.
r e #I In UNITED STATES Patented April 1.2, 1904.
PATENT OEEIcE.
MIRIAM RUTLEDGE, OF GRAND FORKS, NORTH DAKOTA.
SE AT FOR WATER-CLOSETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 756,897, dated April 12, 1904.
Application filed January 30, 1904. Serial No. 191,322. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MIRIAM RUTLEDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Forks, in the county of Grand Forks and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seats for WVater- Closets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in seats for water-closets; and the object of the invention is to generally improve upon this class of invention by providing an auxiliary seat which may be easily applied to the ordinary seat and removed therefrom.
The invention consists, further, in a device of this character comprising various details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
1 illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View through my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail view through the hinged members, and Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of one of the hinged members.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the bowl of a closet of ordinary construction, and B the permanent seat, which is hinged to the fixed board C through the medium of the straphinges D and E, the adjacent edges or ends of which are turned into cylindrical rolls to receive a pivot-pin F.
G designates the coverto the seat, which is hinged at H to the board I.
My detachable seat, which is designated in the drawings by letter K, has a grooved portion N on its under surface provided for the purpose to adapt the cover to be placed over avessel, slop-jar, or other receptacle when used disconnected from the hinge of the permanent seat, and M designates a hingearm which is fastened in any suitable manner, as by bolting, to the seat H, and its end is fastened to a pin 0, which is hinged to the eyes Q, which are integral with the recessed member Q. The latter, which is preferably of cylindrical shape, has a concaved opening or recess 9, which is adapted to slip over the cylindrical portions of the hinges D and E, as shown in the drawings, whereby the auxiliary or detachable seat may be temporarily applied to the ordinary hinged seat.
When it is desired to remove the seat, the member Q is slipped off the cylindrical portions of the hinges, as will be readily understood.
By the provision of a closet-seat made in I accordance with my invention a convenient and sanitary attachment is aflorded which may be conveniently carried from place to place and used in connection with the ordinary seats.
While I have shown a particular construction of apparatus embodying my invention, it will be understood that I may make the seat of any suitable material and so construct the same as to be made up of sections which are hinged together, and the parts may be fastened together in any suitable manner, and the seat may be constructed in various shapes and sizes to meet various conditions Without in any way departing fromthe spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a permanent hinged closet-seat, a detachable seat, a hinged member carried by said detachable seat and adapt= ed to be slipped over the hinge of the permanent seat, and to rest upon the latter, as set forth.
2. In combination with a permanent'closetseat, a hinged member secured thereto termi nating in a cylindrical roll, a board, a hingestrap fastened thereto, a pin connecting said In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my member and strap, a detachable seat, a strap signature in presence of tWo Witnesses. secured thereto, a recessed member hinged to said strap on the detachable seat, and provided MIRIAM RUTLEDGE' 5 With a coneaved recess designed to slip over Witnesses:
the cylindrical roll of said hinged member H. M. ERIcKsoN,
fastened to the permanent seat, as set forth. S. W. RUTLEDGE.
