To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN ANDREsEN, a

citizen of the United States, residing at St.

Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Pins, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to safety-pins; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my invention with the shield thereof in section. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the safetypin open. Fig. 3 is a detail enlarged view, with parts broken away, of the movable member of my invention, showing the hole therethrough. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 1 t of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional View taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a side view, with parts broken away, of a modified form of construction of my invention. Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on the line 7 7 of Fig. 6.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the fixed member, 2 the movable member, and 3 the usual spring-coil, which spring-coil is protected in the usual manner by the sheet-metal clamp or clasp 4.. Mounted on the fixed member 1 is a sheet-metal shield 5. This sheetmetal shield 5 is provided with the usual lateral stop-flange 6, and said shield 5 may be secured to the fixed member 1 in any suitable and mechanical manner.

The essential feature of my invention is providing the movable member 2 with an eye, such as 7. This eye 7 is preferably elongated, as shown, extending longitudinally of the movable member 2. The movable member 2 is also provided with a pointed portion 8.

The fixed member 1 has its free end terminating in a hook 9, which is adapted to be engaged into the eye 7 of the movable member 2. The special construction of this hook 9 is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, wherein it is shown that said hook is an integral portion formed on the free end of the fixed member 1. This is preferably done by a suitable die or instrument by pressing or molding the free end of the member 1 into a hook of this character or any suitable form susceptible of engagement into the movable member. It will also be noticed by referring to Figs. 1 and 2 that the free end of the fixed member 1 passes around through the shield 5, by which said shield is held from lateral movement on the member.

The metal shield 5 is provided with a contracted or flaring mouth or opening 10, which is approximately of the width of the natural thickness of the movable member 2. This contracted opening or mouth 10 acts as a guideway for guiding the eye 7 of the movable member 2 onto and in engagement with the hook 9. It will be noticed, as heretofore stated,that I have designated the portion 9 as a hook, and I desire to point out in this connection that said hook is especially constructed and acts as a lock or fixed resistance to the member 2 regardless of whatever strain may be applied to said hook through the member under operative conditions. In other words, it will be noticed that said hook 9 is provided with a recess 11. The wall of said recess is adapted to engage the inner surface of the eye 7, which lies adjacent the point 8 of the movablemember 2-that is, under conditions when force or pull is applied to the safety-pin when in use.

It will be understood by referring to Fig.1, wherein the movable member 2 is shown looked, that whatever force or strain is applied 'to the member 2 the pointed portion 8 will occupy the position which it occupies in said figure.

Referring to Figs. 6 and 7, which show modified forms of construction, it will be noticed that I form thehook 12 out of the metal composing the shield 5, which is done by being stamped directly from the material composing the shield 5.

Although I have shown in connection with my invention the shield 5, it may be noted in this connection that I can dispense with the shield 5 by using the bent portion 13 of the fixed member 1 as a shield for the point of the movable member by pressing or forming said portion 13 in such a manner as to make it answer the purpose of a guard or shield for the point 8.

It will be noticed from the foregoing de scription that I have invented a safety-pin which when in use is absolutely locked under any and all normal conditions.

The hook 9 is formed of sheet metal and is stamped directly from the guard, and it is disposed longitudinally with the guard and centrally with the restricted opening 10.
