IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
@im Sthrnuh nfimrtu in time Enters atent aub making tart uf it: sans.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: i l Y.
Be it known that I, ELIJAn W. MERRILL, of West Buxton, in the county of'York, undV State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improved Mower; and I herebydeclare the following to'be a. full, clear, and
- exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and u se my inventiomreferhce ,being had to the l accompanying drawings, forming partei' this specification, in which is shown a plan of my invention.
My invention aims at providing 'a simple method of attaching the vibrating-arm to the cutters, and pro- 'curing an easy und effectual way of throwing said arm out of gear when necessary. y i V I effect the attachment by providing the rod connected with the cutters with a head, a, capable of moving in a longitudinal slot, b, in the freine ofl the machine.,A This head is provided with a circular aperture, into` which .passes the rod cattached to .the vibrating-bar. This rod is movable therein :in the direction of its length,
in order to allow itto slip easilybackward andV forward when .the arm UZ is thrown into Vor out ot' gear. By j means of this rod the vibrating motion of the rod d i's directly transmitted to the cutters, without the loss' of power by friction, which necessarily attends the use of gearing, &c.
The arrangement for disengagin'g the arm from its connection with the machinery giving motion Ato the same is as follows: The vibrating-arm is pivoted upon a. swinging lever, x, lfa'stened at-one end by avpivot to the frame of the machine. The other end of this swinging 'lever a: is provided with a hand-hanf, by which it may easily be moved backward or forward, carrying with it the arm d, and engaging or disengaging it, `as the case may be. This is secured in either position by'a catch-puwl, y, which is so attached to the frame as to l allow its ends a vertical motion; It the extremity zof this pawl is a lip, which shuts over the end ofthe lever x, holding it firmly in place. Whenthe arm d is to be thrown out of gear, by pressing the foot upon the Vend l.: of the cutchfpawl, the end is raised, lrelieving theswinging lever a: from the lip, when itmay be easilylmoved by the hand-leverf. When it is thrown outof` gear th paw] y is retu rned to its place by a spring under the .extremity cof theV same, und cectually prevents, by m'eanslofkits lip, the lever :t from slipping into gear by the operating parts, as herein' described; but
any action of its machinery, thus adding much to the safety of the machine. ,'.lhemotonvis communic'ared to my machine by a spirally-curved cam, g, which receives its'rnotion from a small gearwheel, moving on u larger reverse gear attached' to the inner side of the'wheel of the mower. p
I do not claim this cam, nor the 'method of giving-it its inotion; neither do I claim the'reiprocal motion of theba`r d and the cutters, when produced in the manner described, for I am aware that these are not new; but my invention relates to a. simple 'and effective method of connecting, holding in'connection', and disconnecting What I do claim us my invention, and desire to secure AbyLe-tters Patent, is v The vibrating-arm d, in combination with and when -set upon the swinging lever x, together with 'the handleverf and catch-pawl y, the head a land iod c, when arranged as and for the purposespccied.
i i Y ELIJAH W. MERRILL. Witnesses:
WILLIAM H. HALL, CHARLES E. Roskam..
