TO ALL WHM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that I, EDMUND STAIR, of' Harrisonville, in the county of Cass, and State of Missouri, have invented a new aud useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved machine.
Figure 2 is a vertical'cross-section of the same, taken through the line :r x, tig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate'corresponding parts. y
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved washing-machine, simple in construction, easily operated. and which will do its work quickly and well, without'tearing or injuring the clothes; and it consists in the combination of' the peculiarly-constructed basket or clothesfreceptacle with the slotted wash-board formed upon or attached to the tub, as hereinafter more fully described. f
A is the tub, which may be made rectangular or semi-cylindrical in form, as may be desired, and which is i supported upon legs, B, of sufficient length to raise the machine to a convenient height to be operated. C is l the wash-board, which may be straight or curved, and which is grooved or corrugated longitudinally,in the ordinary manner. The wash-board C is slotted transversely, as shown in figs. 1 and 2, for the reception of the ribs of the basket or clothes-receptacle, so that the clothes'may come in contact with and be rubbed along the said wash-board. D are two bars pivoterl to the ends of'the tub A, and the upper ends of which are connected by a bar, d, which also serves as a. handle for operating the machine. 'The lower parts of' the bars D arc branched, and their ends are connected hy the notched hars E. The notched bars E are connected to each other by the curved ribs F, which fit into and move through the slots in the wash-hoard C, so ns to allow the clothes in the basket or receptacle to come in contact with the sairlwnshhoard. If desired, the basket or clutlxcsreceptacle may be divided into two compartments, by a partition extending longitudinally through its central part, to divide the clothes, so that the said basket will not have to move so far without moving the clothes upon the wash-hoard.E I
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent` A washing-machine, consisting ofthe tub A, corrugated wash-board C,grooved transversely at lupivoted end-pieces D, connecting-rod d', notched connecting-hars E, and ribs F, all constructed, arranged, and operating as Vset forth.
' EDMUND S'IAIR.
