UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. DOVER, OF CRANSTON, RHODE ISLAND.
SCARFTPIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,857,
Application filed December 9, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Dovnraa citizen of theUnited States, residing at Cranston, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scarf-Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to scarf-pins comprising a head, pin-stem, and joint or cup member, and has for its object the firm union of the head and pin-stem. In a prior patent, No. 7 46,049, I have set forth a structure which produces satisfactory results by means of a pin traversing certain extensions upon the head and pin-stem. The continued strain of the connected parts after prolonged wear tends to loosen the binding-pin, or an imperfect fit or riveting of the latter produces a like result, thereby occasionally destroying the required rigidity of the parts. Furthermore, the flattening of a portion of the pin-stem therein materially weakened the structureof an important point. I I
In order to obviate the enumerated disadvantages, my invention consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figurel is a side elevation of the pin-stem member; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the cup member; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the complete scarf-pin, and Fig. I a section of the latter on line 00 w of Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views.
My new scarf-pin comprises an engaging member A, which consists of a long pointed stem at, an intermediate crook or curved portion 6, and terminates in a spur c.
Soldered or otherwise fixed to the scarf-pin head B is a cup or joint member 0K, preferably oblong in cross-section and having a curved outline to conform to the curved portion 6 of the pin-stem and in which the latter rests. In
dated March 29, 1904.
$erial No. 184,388. (No model.)
assembling the parts it will be noted that the base of the spur 0 contacts with the upper margin of the cup d. When the parts are assembled by placing the crook b in the cup ol, the opposite sides of the cup are tightly forced or pinched together with pliers or other convenient means, thereby snugly securing the parts laterally. The closure of the cup sides forced the upper margin of the cup (i into tight contact with the pin-stem upon either" side of its curved portion Z), by this means preventing any transverse play of the securing member A in relation to the head B.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In an article of the class described, the combination with the head of a cup upon the head having concave side walls, and a pinstem provided intermediate its extremities with a crooked portion. said crooked portion being held in the cup by the compression of the walls.
2. In an article of the class described, the combination with the head of a cup upon the head having concave side walls, a pin-stem provided at its extremity with a spur, and
having a curved portion adjacent the spur,
said curved portion being held in the cup by compression of the walls.
3. In an article of the class described, the combination with the head of a cup upon the head having concave side walls, a pin-stem, a
spur upon one extremity of the stem, a looped portion adjacent the spur, said looped portion being laterally engaged by the compression of the walls, and the edge of the cup contacting with the pin-stem at points on either side of the loop.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. DOVER.
Witnesses:
HORATIO E. BELLOWS, WILLIAM E. BROWN.
