SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 754,333, dated March 8, 1904.

To all w/wm it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN A. MULVEY, acitizen of the United States,residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and usefullmprovements in Lead-Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in lead-pencils; and its object is to provide a pencil of simple construction having adjustable lead which can be moved a desired distance from the point of the pencil so as to obviate the necessity of sharpening the same.
The invention consists in providing a sheath having a longitudinally extending passage therethrough which communicates with a longitudinally-extending slot formed in one side of the sheath. A easing, preferably formed of paper, is mounted upon the sheath and has a concentric tubular portion arranged longitudinally therein, and within this tubular portion is secured the lead of the pencil. A web connects the tubular portion with the body of the casing and is slidably mounted in the slot in the sheath, and therefore when the casing is moved longitudinally upon the sheath the lead will be carried therewith and projected a desired distance toward the end of the sheath.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a pencil construct ed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the sheath, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the casing and showing the lead secured thereto.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a sheath having a longitudinallyextending passage 2 therethrough, said passage communicating with alongitudinally-extending slot 3. This slot extends from one end of the sheath to the other and is of sufii cient width to permit a web L to slide therein. This web is preferably formed of paper and is integral with a casing 5, which incloses the Serial No. 176,120- (No model.)
tube 6 is formed at the inner edge of the web and extends longitudinally of the casing and concentric thereto. This tube is equal in diameter to the passage 2 and is adapted to inclose a strip of lead 7 orother suitable writing material, to which it is glued.
In assembling the parts herein described the lead 7 is inserted within the tube 6, and saidv tube is then slid longitudinally into the passage 2 and the web 4 into the slot 3. The casing 5 will inclose the sheath and extends approximately from one end to the other thereof. The pencil is first sharpened, as ordinarily; but after the lead has been worn and it becomes necessary to again expose it for writing purposes the casing 5 is slid longitudinally upon the sheath and carries the lead therewith. This operation can be repeated until all of the lead has been used, when a new strip can be placed within the sheath.
It will be seen that the pencil is very simple and inexpensive in construction and obviates the necessity of sharpening the same, as where ordinary pencils are employed.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. A pencil comprising a sheath having a longitudinally-extending passage therethrough, and a longitudinally-extending slot communicating with the passage, a casing slidably mounted upon the sheath, a tube integral therewith and slidably mounted within the passage,
a web integral with the tube and casing and slidably mounted within the slot, and a strip of writing material within the tube and adapted to be carried thereby.
2. In a pencil, the combination with a sheath having a longitudinally extending passage therethrough, and a longitudinally-extending slot communicating with the passage; of a casing slidably mounted upon the sheath and projecting into the slot and passage, and a strip 1 of writing material inclosed and adapted to be carried by the casing.
3. In a pencil, the combination with a sheath having a passage extending longitudinally therethrough, and a longitudinally-extending slot communicating with the passage and extending from one end to the other of the sheath; of a casing slidably mounted upon the sheath,
a tube inclosed thereby and integral therepresence of two Witnesses.
