Description

No. 754,212. PATENTBD MAR.'8, 1904. L. G. GRAESSLE. COMBINED TABLE AND BED.
APPLICATION FILED AUG 12 1903 N0 MODEL.
'- Witnesses;
v Inventor.
UNITED STATES Patented March 8, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED TABLE AND BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 754,212, dated. March 8, 1904.
' Application filed August 12, 1903. Serial No. 169,175. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lrzzm CAROLINE GRAEssLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Table and Bed, of which the following is a specification.v
My invention relates to a combined table and bed, the object of my'invention being to provide an article of furniture which when folded up can be used as a table and when extended can be used as a bed.
Further objects of my invention are to provide an article of this character which shall present a neat appearance when used as a table and shall be comfortable and safe when used as a bed and which can be transformed from one to the other with ease and rapidity.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective view of the device when used as a table. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the same when in the intermediate position. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the device extended for use as a bed. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a latch member.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the main or central side pieces connected by transverse slats 2, said side pieces and slats forming the main frame. Said frame is supported by legs 3. To the ends of these side pieces 1' are hinged the terminal side pieces 4:, connected across by the table-top sections 5 and also by the end bars 6, thus forming terminal frames. When said terminal side pieces 4 are swung inward on their hinges to form a table, they rest on the tops of the central side pieces 1 and the table-top sections 5 close together, as shown in Fig. 1, forming the main portion of the table. The ends of the tabletop are formed by narrow sections 7 which are rigidly secured to the table ends 8 and the corner-pieces 9. They move inward to form the table and outward to form the ends of the bed and are preferably supported upon legs 10, either one or two in number at each end, or the legs may be dispensed with altogether, as slides 11 are secured to saidends and slide between the transverse slats 2, thus supportable latching device may be used, and Iherein show a latching device which is very com monly used on trunks, valises, and dress-suit cases. It comprises a loop 15, pivotally supported by a casing 16 and having a doubleacting spring engagement therewith, said loop fitting snugly around a tongue 17 on the other member, which tongue enters a socket 18 in the casing 16. a
In order to insure a neat appearance for the device'when used as a table, I secure at the outer sides of the central side pieces 1 cover plates or boards 19, which have hinged thereon the strips 20, and when the device is used as a table these strips are turned upward, so as to completely conceal the opening between the ends of the terminal side pieces, which in this position will be resting upon the central side pieces. When the device is used as a bed, said strips 20 hang down over the coverplates 19.
I donot restrict myself to the precise construction here shown, as the terminal table-top .sections may be made wider and the central sections narrower, if desired, and various changes may be made herein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1. A combined table and bed comprising a central frame, terminal frames pivotally connected to the central frame, a wire mattress secured at its ends only to said terminal frames, the intermediate part being free, ends, and slides rigidly connected to said ends and slidably engaging the central frame whereby said ends close the ends of the table when folded and form the ends of the bed when unfolded, substantially as described.
2. A combined table and bed comprising a 5 ing said ends from the central main frame. central frame, terminal frames pivotally con- I nected to the central frame, a mattress secured at its ends to said terminal frames, ends which close the ends of the table when folded and form the ends of the bed when unfolded, transverse slats in the main frame, and slides rigidly secured to the ends and sliding between the transverse slats, substantially as described. 3. A combined table and bed comprising a central frame, terminal frames pivotally connected to the central frame, a mattress secured at its ends to said terminal frames, ends, and slides rigidly connected to said ends and slidably engaging the central frame whereby said ends close the ends of the table when folded and form the ends of the bed when unfolded, and automatically-locking devices for securing the sections in their closed position concealed by said sections when so closed, substantially as described. I
4:. A combined table and bed comprising a central frame, terminal frames pivotally connected to the central frame, a mattress secured at its ends to said terminal frames, ends, slides rigidly connected to said ends and slidably engaging the central frame, whereby said ends close the ends of the table when folded and form the ends of the bed when unfolded, and movable strips at the sides of the table of uniform width and the length of the central frame and arranged to cover the openings between the ends of the terminal side pieces when the latter are closed, substantially as described.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
L. I. BRITTON, H. A. HARDINGE.
