TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, VALMORE A. DUNN, of West Peru, in the county of Oxford, and State of Maine, have invented a new and improved Anvil-Cutter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those' skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part; of this specification. A i
This invention relates to an anvil-cutter, and consists in a pair of shears, one of the jaws whereof is xed by an arm into a block or anvil. l
The shears are kept open by a spring, and the nail or other article to be cut being placed on the sharp edge of the lever, the other end thereof is struck smartly with a hammer, shearing olf the head fair and square, leaving the end of the nail-rod smooth for the forging of the next nail.
The accompanying drawing represents the shears mounted on the anvil or block.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A A is the block; B B, `the fixed jaw, having an arm, b, by which it is securely set in the block. The other jaw, C, has its opposing edge sharpened, and is pivoted to b at; c. A spring, D, presses up the lever-arm C', keeping the shears open to receive the nail or other material to be cut. The nail being first forged, is placed on the sharp edge of C, and a smart blow being given npon the end of the lever-arm C', operates the shears, cutting smoothly olf the head of the nail, and leaving the end of the nail-rod smooth for the forging of the next nail. A stop, d, serves to hold the spring D to the end of the lever-arm C', and to prevent the sharp edge C from jamming't-oo far on B. E, e e are the horse-shoe nails as cut by my shears.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved shears, composed of the fixed arm b and jaw B, lever C', C, and -spring D, combined and arranged in manner substantially as above set forth and described.
VALMORE A. DUNN.
