PATENT OFFICE.
MELVIN D. COMPTON, OF NEW YORK, N. p Y.
COMBINATION C HECK, SPREADER, AND PILOT-LIGHT DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,038, dated February 16, 1904.
Application filed November 20, 1902. Serial No. 132,135, (No model.)
vide a single device which will serve when used in connection with a Bunsen burner and, for example, a mantle the threefold purpose of turning on the pilot-light, of regulating the supply of gas for the production of the best results, and of extinguishing the light and permittingapilot-light to burn, so that the burner can be readily relighted.
To these and other ends hereinafter set forth the invention, stated in general terms, consists in a device of the class specified comprising two parts movable in respect to each other and whereof one is provided with a seat and the other with a complementa-l valve and said seat being notched to provide a passage for supporting a pilot-light, and the invention further comprises the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a View principally in central section illustrating a device embodying features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view with the valve member removed in order to show the notched seat, and Fig. 3 is an elevational View showing a complete burner provided with parts embodying features of the invention.
In the drawings the valve member 1 is carried by the part 2 in such a way that these two elements in use constitute one piece. As shown, the valve member is provided with a stem which is connected with the part 2, and
in this way the device can be easily made and conveniently assembled. The part2 is shown as internally threaded for engagement with the end of a supply-pipe and as externally threaded for engagement with the cap 3,which in its turn is externally fitted for engagement with the Bunsen or mixing tube 4. The part 3 is also provided with a seat 5, having one or more notches 6, of which three are shown in Fig. 2- and of which the number may be increased or diminished. The part 2 is provided with a spider 7, to which the stem of the valve member is secured.
To assemble the parts shown in the drawings, the members 2 and 3 are first screwed together and the stem of the valve member is then connected with the spider 7.
In use the seat 5 and valve member 1, which is shown as of generally spheroidal form, may be properly positioned for admitting that quantity of gas which is most appropriate for the air entering the tube 4, and when it is desired to extinguish the main light or flame the seat and valve member are brought into contact, and in such case the notches 6 afford a passage or by-pass suflicient to support a small or pilot light or flame at the top of the tube 4. As shown, these adjustments can be accomplished by turning the part 3 in one direction or the other, which has the effect of screwing it up and down.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that modifications may be made in detail without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinabove set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class specified comprising two elements whereof one is provided with a seat and the other with a valve member and both elements movable in respect to each other to adjust the escape past the valve and said seat provided withnotches for supporting a pilotlight, substantially as described.
52. The combination in a device ofthe class roidal Valve member and a notched seat, subto specified of a notched seat and a fixed valve stantially as described.
member, substantially as described. Intestimony whereoflhavehereunto signed 3. In combination a Bunsen or air-mixing my name.
tube, and a gas-check at the base thereof x Which comprises a fixed Valve member and a MELVIN Q notched seat whereby a blue pilot-flame is In presence of provided, substantially as described. W. J. JACKSON,
4. In combination a fixed generally sphe- K. M. GILLIGAN.
