' making the two covers cooperative and mutually interdependent, so that the book-back is reinforced and any strain on either cover is partially borne and resisted by the other through the peculiar arrangement of the lining material.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book embodying my invention complete except for the fastening of one of the end sheets to its cover, shown partly broken away. Fig. 2 is'a partial end view with the cover removed, showing one method of inserting lining-strips. Fig. 3 is a partial perspective before applying the cover, showing the method of disposing said lining-strips.

The method of operation is as follows: Be-

tween the back edges of the two outer signatures (so called) 5 6 and their respective adjacent ones 7 8 I insert the fold of two unequallyfolded pieces of linen duck or other suitable lining material 9 10, having their projecting flaps or ends 11 12 of shorter length than the projecting flaps or ends 13 14:. (See Fig. 2.) These folded pieces 9 may be and preferably are first fastened to their adjacent signatures 5 7and 6 8 by means of sewing or gluing, or the fastening may be part of the one operation of sewing the entire'book-forming material which unites all the signatures. In the preferred method the four outer signatures 5 6 7 8, with their inserted folds 9 10, after being fastened as described are placed in proper juxtaposition to the rest of the book-forming material E (seeFig. 2) and the whole sewed through the two folds in any suitable manner. I next place the front and back end leaves 15 16 in position and with a proper adhesive secure to them the short flaps or projecting ends 11 12 of said folded pieces 9 10, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. I then slit the projecting ends 13 14 of the folded pieces 9 10 each into several strips, preferably three, as 18 20 22,with the middle one about as wide as the other two,

and applying a coating of adhesive substance to the back of the book-forming material E I fasten strips 18 21 22 to said back, thus giving it one complete covering of the lining material, the narrow strips 18 and 22 belonging to fold 9 and the wider strip 21 to fold 10. The extra lengths of the strips 18 21 22 in excess of the width of the book-forming material E are then out off, as shown at C, Figs. 1

' and 3, preliminary to forming the double back.

A coating of the adhesive mixture is then applied hot tothe outside of said strips 18 21 22, and strips 19 2O 23 are then fastened over them, making a second complete back covering formed from the lining material. The free. ends or extra lengths of these latter-strips 19 20 23'-integral with the opposite lining-pieces are not cut off, but are fastened, with the end leaves 15-16, to the covers, ends 19 and 23 to cover A and end 20 to cover B, thus reinforcing the hinge-joints formed by'the flaps 11 12. i

To give greater strength, the back portion D of the cover can be fastened to the booklining and the book-forming material by the use of proper adhesives.

It is understood that in case the'book-forming material is made up of separate sheets the folded pieces 9 10 would be inserted several sheets from the outer ones.

Having thus described my inventionfwhat I claim is 1. In the binding of suitable material into material, substantially as set forth.

2. The described improvement in binding embodying assembled sections or signatures and folded lining-pieces interposed along the through the reinforcing agency of the lining fold between the two outer signatures and those intermediate, all permanently united by the transverse stitching of the book-back, and combined With the external cover, one flap of each lining-piece extending from its fold and seam and fastened to the adjacent cover, While the other flaps of said pieces extend directly across the book-back, overlapping and adhering to each other the outermost one being fastened terminally to the opposite cover, substantially as set forth.

The described improvement in binding books, embodying assembled sections or signatures and folded lining-pieces secured along the fold to the tWo outer signatures, and all permanently united bythe transverse stitching of the book-back, and combined With a suitable cover, the outermost flap of each lining-piece being secured to the inner face of the adjacent cover, and the innermost flaps of such pieces being formed into parallel strips, extended alternately from opposite directions across the book-back, fastened thereto and to each other in superposed position, and the terminal portion of each outside strip, when so superposed and united, being fastened to the inner face of the opposite cover, substantially as set forth.
