To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN LAKINS J oHN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Vessels, constituting an improvement on my former patent, No. 619,145, dated February 7, 1899; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to covers for cooking utensils and other vessels, the object being to provide a cover which may be readily applied to the vessel and in which access may be had to the interior of the vessel without the necessity of removing the cover and also providing a perfect self -draining cover which.

will convey the water of condensation back into the vessel, thereby overcoming one of the most objectionable features of the covers now in use.

A further object is in providing means whereby the cover may be made to fit vessels of different sizes, which is oneof the important features of this invention.

The invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction, as will appear hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claim.

My improved cover is composed of a ring A, provided with a downnwardly and inwardly projecting draining-surface a, which is a material improvement over the draining portion of my former patent. Hinged to the ring is a lid B. The construction of the hinge is such as to form an upward ly-projecting lug b, which in turn forms a rest for the lid when in the open position. This hinge is secured to the ring and lid in any suitable manner, preferably by riveting, as shown in the drawings. A knob 0 is secured to the lid and handles d to the ring to prevent the hands being burned when handling the cover while in use. Springs or clampsC are provided and secured to the ring A for rigidly holding the cover in position while in use and particularly during the draining operation. The most important feature, however, of these springs or clamps is in adapting the covers for use on different sizes of vessels. The manner of securing said springs or clamps to the ring is preferably by means of rivets, although any other suitable means may be employed.

When the cover is in place, ready access may be had to the interior of the vessel by simply taking hold of the knob C and lifting the lid up into the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 4. When in this position, the condensed water will be conveyed back into the vessel, thus overcoming one of the most dreaded inconveniences caused by the use of the ordinary vessel-covers.

This invention provides the best mean known to me for draining the superfluous water from any article cooked in a vessel without losing. or wasting any of it and without danger of the hands being burned by escaping steam.
