SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 748,881, dated January 5, 1904.

Be it known that I, ALPHEUS Aneus'rus PEABT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Deloraine, Tasmania, Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to the Lubrication of Vehicle-Axles, of which the following is a full and clear description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention'relates to the lubrication of vehicle-axles of that class in which the extremities of the axles are protected byascrewcap which serves the double purpose of exeluding foreign abradiug particles and retaining the lubricant for the axle-bearing. In vehicles having the construction of axle and cap referred to inconvenience and loss of time is occasioned and the cap liable to become loose by reason of its frequent removal for the insertion of lubricant. Moreover, a wrench has to be employed in order to manipulate the cap.
My invention is designed to overcome the objectionable features above referred to in connection with the lubrication as at present performed and to provide simply an ethosciousmeans whereby lubricant can be quickly introduced into the cap without its removal in a cleanly and very convenient way.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of a cap, showing my device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section through Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the cap and my device.
In all the figures like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A indicates a cap commonly used, and consists of a hollow shell closed at its front end a and having its rear end inwardly screwthreaded, as at b, for attachment to the axlebox (not shown) and its outer peripheral surface provided with fiat surfaces for the application thereto ofa wrench.
By my invention the cap A has a perforation 0 in its end a, in which is fitted to slide freely a tubular section 0, open at its inner extremity cl and closed at its other end e, at which point its diameter is increased to form the socket B, open at its forward end. The tube 0 is provided with a peripheral opening A washer E, of leather or other suitable compressible substance, is passed over the tube 0 and rests against the shoulder g. A ferrule H is telescopically fitted into the socket B and is retained therein by pins G, projecting inwardly from the wheel of the socket B and entering slots h. The forward end of the ferrule H has an inwardly-turned flange which serves to retain a spring I within the socket B.
Secured by means of screws or rivets j or alternatively formed integral with the cap A is a ring J having an outwardly-projecting flange K, constituting a housing, in which are oppositely-projecting pins L, adapted to enter angled slots Z, which with the pins L form what are commonly known as bayonetjoints to retain in position a cap 'M, which fits over the flanges K.
When lubricant is to be introduced into the cap A, the cap M is grasped by the fingersor hand and given a slight turn until the pins L enter the longitudinal part of the slots Z, when the cap can be readily withdrawn from off the flange K, being assisted by the outward pressure of the spring I, which normally forces the ferrule H against the cap M with a force suificient to create friction between the pins L and the sides of the slots Z to prevent the cap becoming accidentally removed. The cap M having been removed, the socket B is withdrawn until the opening f of the tubular portion 0 is exposed. Lubricant is then entered into the opening f and the parts replaced. The lubricant enters the cap through the tubular section at d and is prevented from escaping through the perforation c by the flexible washer E, which is compressed against the end wall a, of the cap A by pressure of the spring I.

The herein-described device for introducing lubricant into the caps of vehicle-wheel hubs said device consisting of a tubular section open at its inner end and closed at its outer end, slidingly fitting in and projecting through a perforation in the front end of the cap of a vehicle-wheel hub, there being an opening in the peripheral surface of the tubular section, an open end socket formed on flange and having bayonet-joint connection therewith, all substantially as described and illustrated in the drawings, and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
